Mechanical Engineer III

Tri Tool, Inc.•Rancho Cordova, CA
•$91,000 - $115,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer III designs and drafts industrial tools and machinery for pipe and tube machining and welding applications. With limited supervision, this engineer collaborates across engineering, production/manufacturing, product management, service, and repair; supports products throughout their lifecycle; and independently manages medium and large projects. The position is full-time, within the engineering department, and based at Tri Tool’s headquarters in Rancho Cordova, California. Work includes mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly drawings, tolerance analysis, bills of materials, component specification, and supporting documentation. The engineer uses SolidWorks and applies ASME Y14.5M standards, while considering materials, strength, operating conditions, coatings, joining methods, manufacturing processes, tolerances, and cost. The role also covers electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system design; maintaining component and manufacturing records in NetSuite; contributing to proposals and risk analyses; and assembling and testing prototypes in an R&D shop environment. The role requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and at least seven years of applicable professional experience. A master’s degree and five or more years of applicable experience may be considered. The position offers extensive access to an in-house machine shop to build, test, and refine designs. Physical requirements include lifting or moving up to 50 pounds without assistance, using required safety equipment, and safely using hand and power tools and office equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • At least seven years of applicable professional experience in mechanical design, drafting, fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical tools or systems. A master’s-level engineering degree and five or more years of applicable experience may be considered.
  • Strong command of machine design fundamentals, including bearing types and selection, press fits and tolerances, gear selection, and torque calculations.
  • Ability to present specific examples of machine designs executed.
  • Experience integrating pneumatic, hydraulic, and electromechanical components, including motors, actuators, and valves, into tooling.
  • Experience using SolidWorks or other 3D CAD and drafting tools.
  • Knowledge of GD&T tolerancing methods and their appropriate application.
  • High attention to detail and completeness of work.
  • Tenacious attitude and drive to deliver results on schedule.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree.
  • Hands-on shop experience, such as operating mills or lathes, or sustained mechanical build work.
  • Machine and tool design experience for portable and/or in situ industrial tool industries.
  • CNC machine and mechanism design experience.
  • Design experience with custom industrial equipment and tools.
  • Design experience with consumable metal cutting tools, such as endmills, indexable inserts and holders, and turning tools.
  • Part design for Additive Manufacturing.
  • Manufacturing process development for Additive Manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineering, production/manufacturing, product management, service, and repair colleagues to solve problems and develop products.
  • Support products through their full lifecycle, from quoting and design through manuals and customer support.
  • Prepare manufacturing and assembly mechanical drawings, tolerance analyses and stack-ups, and other documentation to ASME Y14.5M standards using SolidWorks.
  • Design and draft mechanical tools, fixtures, machine components, and subassemblies.
  • Address bills of materials, material selection, strength of materials, static thermodynamic conditions and environments, plating and coatings, assembly and joining hardware, manufacturing processes, tolerances, and manufacturing cost in project work.
  • Design and specify electromechanical systems, including AC and DC motors, servo motors, solenoids, and actuators.
  • Design and specify pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including cylinders, actuators, valves, regulators, hoses, and fittings.
  • Maintain accurate component information, revisions, and manufacturing bills of materials in Tri Tool’s NetSuite ERP system.
  • Manage medium and large projects with little direction and independently complete engineering tasks and projects.
  • Assist with or lead proposal and business development deliverables, including equipment and risk analysis.
  • Assemble and test prototypes and perform hands-on problem solving in an R&D shop environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
