Mechanical Engineer II (Onsite)

Axon•Scottsdale, AZ
•Onsite

About The Position

As a Mechanical Engineer II on Axon’s Automation Team, you will contribute to the design, build, and deployment of custom, high-speed automated assembly machinery from concept through release. You will work with NPI, R&D, Manufacturing Engineering, Controls Engineers, and Operations to develop mechanical subsystems, prototype proof-of-principle solutions, and commission equipment hands-on. The goal is to deliver reliable automated assembly cells that protect production output and advance Axon’s mission. The role includes designing custom mechanical stations, tooling, layouts, mechanisms, and framing; supporting early product development and functional design specifications; assembling and commissioning machinery; leading design reviews and equipment acceptance tests; maintaining technical documentation; and providing mechanical support for manufacturing engineering improvement projects. The position is onsite and reports to the Director, Manufacturing Engineering & Automation. It has no direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in automation engineering or a related field.
  • Proficient 3D CAD skills; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of design for manufacturing and design for assembly, including machining, injection molding, and sheet metal.
  • Experience integrating servos, pneumatics, indexers, feeders, robotics, and machine vision.
  • Practical understanding of technical machine specifications (FDS), cycle-time calculations, and project tracking using Smartsheet.
  • Demonstrated hands-on mechanical fabrication, shop-tool use, assembly, diagnostics, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong cross-functional communication and ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and operations teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design custom mechanical stations, tooling, station layouts, mechanisms, and framing for automated assembly cells using SolidWorks CAD.
  • Partner with R&D and NPI teams to build proof-of-principle benchtop prototypes and provide design-for-assembly feedback during early product development.
  • Assist in drafting Functional Design Specifications, defining station mechanics and sequences, and preparing bills of materials and component cost estimates.
  • Assemble, plumb, align, and commission custom machinery, using technician support when available.
  • Lead design reviews and factory and site acceptance tests, and support Production until target OEE baselines are met.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including CAD drawings, master bills of materials, spare-parts lists, preventive-maintenance task plans, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Provide technical support and mechanical problem-solving for complex Manufacturing Engineering continuous-improvement projects.
