Mechanical Engineer I (Onsite)

RTX•Tucson, AZ
•$62,900 - $119,700•Onsite

About The Position

Join Raytheon’s Hardware Engineering Organization and contribute mechanical engineering expertise to mission-critical defense systems across radar, missile, and command-and-control platforms. The role spans the product lifecycle, from concept design and structural and thermal analysis through rapid prototyping, design verification testing, and factory support. You will work with systems, electrical, and manufacturing engineers to solve technical challenges and deliver robust, high-reliability mechanical solutions. Occasional travel within the continental United States to customer sites or suppliers is generally required. International and longer-duration travel assignments are available but optional.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) discipline, obtained by the start date.
  • Experience using parametric 3D CAD software, such as SolidWorks, PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA, or Siemens NX, to create 3D solid models, mechanical assemblies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Experience in mechanical design through coursework, academic research, engineering competition teams, or hands-on projects.
  • Experience may be gained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.
  • U.S. citizenship is required because only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • An active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance is required before the start date; ability to obtain an interim clearance is also required before the start date.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Knowledge or application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles per ASME/ANSI Y14.5.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and mechanical fabrication, including additive manufacturing (FDM, SLA, or SLS 3D printing) or machine shop equipment such as mills, lathes, drill presses, or CNC equipment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving aptitude applied to structural, thermal, or multidisciplinary hardware challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Design, model, and document mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and major end items in accordance with defense system requirements.
  • Generate and maintain parametric 3D CAD models, complex assembly hierarchies, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Validate design fit, form, and functionality through rapid prototyping, physical testing, and engineering simulations.
  • Support factory operations, integration facilities, and external suppliers with product manufacturing, assembly, and integration.
  • Participate in design peer reviews, resolve technical action items, and conduct trade studies to inform engineering decisions.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to analyze and resolve mechanical hardware issues.
