MCW is currently seeking a Mechanical Designer to join our Toronto office. This role plays a key part in delivering projects of varying size and complexity, with a strong emphasis on plumbing system design within a multidisciplinary environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to deepen their expertise in plumbing design while continuing to build experience across mechanical building systems. Requirements

  • 5–7 years of experience as a Mechanical Designer with a strong focus on plumbing design in a consulting engineering environment
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of OBC, OPC, NBC, NPC, CSA Z317 and relevant plumbing codes
  • Experience with plumbing system calculations and pipe sizing (domestic water, storm, sanitary, sprinkler systems)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
  • Familiarity with project delivery, coordination, and construction administration
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines/successful completion of deliverables
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization, including executives
  • High level of sound and independent judgment and reasoning
  • Excellent time management skills and project management skills
  • Ability to work under pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to cost estimating and project planning is an asset
  • Actively working toward P.Eng. designation, or a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce drawings and schematics for mechanical systems, including HVAC and fire protection, with a strong focus on plumbing systems
  • Perform plumbing design calculations, including domestic water, sanitary, and storm system sizing and layouts
  • Design plumbing systems, including sanitary waste, venting, stormwater, domestic water distribution, and specialty systems (e.g., purified water)
  • Assist and work with mechanical engineers to develop load calculations, schematics, equipment selection, and system concept report
  • Design and coordinate medical gas, compressed air, natural gas, and fire protection systems, where applicable
  • Size, select, and specify plumbing fixtures, piping systems, and associated equipment
  • Review architectural and structural drawings to ensure coordination and design integration
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications, contract documents, and system concept reports
  • Participate in construction administration activities, including site visits, field reviews, and construction meetings on an as needed basis
  • Review shop drawings and respond to contractor inquiries (RFIs)
  • Support project planning activities, including schedules, work plans, and coordination with internal teams
  • Assist in preparing quantity take-offs and construction cost estimates as required
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure timely and high-quality project delivery
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines and external stakeholders (architects, consultants)
  • Provide guidance and support to junior team members as needed
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and team efficiency
  • Help build and maintain strong client relationships
