Mechanical Designer for SEM

ASML•San Jose, CA

About The Position

ASML develops lithography and e-Beam machines used by leading chipmakers to manufacture increasingly capable microchips. The role’s stated mission is to design electron-optics systems and submodules for advanced e-Beam inspection and metrology tools. The successful candidate will design, develop, test, analyze, and implement functions and modules that meet application requirements, taking designs from concept through release for high-volume manufacturing. The work includes creating system- and module-level design documentation, performing simulations and calculations, leading design reviews and experiments, assessing and mitigating risks, and supporting verification and validation. The designer will work with vendors and consultants, troubleshoot fabrication and integration issues, support manufacturing transition and technical processing documentation, and investigate new technologies and concepts for future electron-optics modules. The posting also calls for experiments to identify or rule out root causes of critical eSource issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 or more years of experience; a master’s degree or Ph.D. may be accepted with fewer years of experience.
  • A background in physics, optics, materials, or engineering and science fields such as mechanical or semiconductor-related disciplines is preferred.
  • Self-driven and innovative, with a good understanding of physics and mechanics and strong problem-analysis and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong hands-on and troubleshooting skills, and the ability to understand and learn new skills and knowledge.
  • Teamwork skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and 2D detailed drawings using SolidWorks and NX.
  • Experience designing parts and assemblies for ultra-high-vacuum applications.
  • Experience designing parts and assemblies for high-voltage environments.
  • Knowledge of materials and material selection, manufacturing, and cleaning processes for components used in electron-beam inspection systems.
  • Ability to perform structural and thermal finite-element analysis using NX or COMSOL.
  • Experience designing, fabricating, and testing mechanical or electromechanical modules and related system interfaces for capital equipment tools.
  • Two or more years of relevant experience with a semiconductor equipment mechanical product.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management tools such as Siemens TCE.

Responsibilities

  • Design electron-optics modules and subsystems for e-Beam inspection tools, from concept through release for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Create design documentation from system level to module level, including specifications, design principles, details, and interfaces, in accordance with ASML design processes.
  • Perform simulations and calculations for electron-optics module design, including thermal, vacuum, high-voltage, dynamics, and mechanical finite-element analyses.
  • Lead design reviews, error-budget development, risk assessment and mitigation, experiments, and verification and validation processes.
  • Communicate concepts, designs, and test results through presentations and written evaluations.
  • Work with vendors and consultants to develop, analyze, and fabricate components and subassemblies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems during parts and module fabrication.
  • Participate in electron-optics system and subsystem integration and testing, troubleshoot issues, and verify designs.
  • Provide technical processing documentation and support manufacturing in transitioning designs into mass production.
  • Study and develop new technologies and concepts for future electron-optics modules.
  • Design experiments to investigate root causes of critical eSource-related issues.
