About The Position

The Mechanical and Utility EIT provides direction to the utility disciplines, engineers, designs and lays out work in conjunction with the needs of the water, HVAC, electrical, steam utilities and the steam/power plant under supervision of the senior mechanical engineer III. Develops projects in conjunction with the master plan including project design, engineering, estimates and proposed schedules; organizes and participates in design/construction teams; reviews design plans and specifications and estimates; influences and manages construction budgets. The position provides engineering support for the Utility Superintendents, implements and ensures compliance with campus standards; is familiar with standard concepts, contractual mechanisms and procedures, practices and technical procedures within the engineering field; provides technical guidance and design services for smaller renovations; relies on engineering knowledge and judgment to plan and accomplish tasks; utilizes certain degree of creativity and latitude; works independently with minimal supervision. This position provides good customer service to internal and external customers. Supports energy efficiency and commissioning projects with campus and utility provider.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • Ability to obtain an EIT certification within 6 months
  • 0-2 years of Mechanical engineering design experience
  • Knowledge and skill to design mechanical systems such as HVAC, steam distribution, boilers, hot water, pumps, air and chemical feed.
  • Ability to understand the above systems and the relation of each within a campus building as well as campus as a whole.
  • Familiarity with TVA EnergyRight or similar energy efficiency incentive programs
  • Ability and knowledge to analyze data to generate reports and to substantiate projects.
  • Knowledge of EPA reporting.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Observation skills
  • Ability and skill to solve mechanical system problems.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years preferred experience
  • Masters in Engineering related field
  • 2+ years experience which can include CO-OP experience
  • Certified Energy Manager certificate
  • EIT Certification
  • Exposure to building automation systems (BAS/BMS), commissioning or retro-commissioning, energy modeling, or utility efficiency programs.
  • Knowledge of Emission testing and reporting with the use of spreadsheet for computations and tracking.
  • Ability to use design skills within the knowledge of mechanical engineering.
  • Knowledge in the installation and service of mechanical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Support energy efficiency projects through TVA’s EnergyRight program
  • Assist with commissioning and retro-commissioning of new and existing buildings
  • Monitor HVAC system performance using building automation and fault detection tools
  • Identify operational issues to improve reliability and efficiency
  • Supports HVAC system analysis, troubleshooting, and performance optimization across new and existing campus buildings
  • Assists with commissioning and retro-commissioning activities in coordination with third-party commissioning agents
  • Monitors building automation system data and fault detection dashboards to identify operational deficiencies and energy-saving opportunities and supports campus energy efficiency initiatives, including development of calculations and documentation for TVA EnergyRight incentive projects
  • Responsible for: designing, engineering, evaluating, planning, and the project oversight of mechanical products, equipment, systems, or processes to meet campus specifications and needs.
  • Investigate equipment failures.
  • Diagnose faulty operations and recommend solutions.
  • Confer with other engineers or other utility personnel on utility and capital projects per the master plan.
  • Specify system components or engineer modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design, performance standards and specifications, develop and maintain campus mechanical standards and oversee the tracking and recording of emissions for environmental regulations reporting.
  • Responsible for management and leading design and construction progress meetings.
  • Propose, develop, and perform cost analysis for mechanical or electrical system improvement projects and complete documentation for bidding and to coordinate construction of the project.
  • Prepare and administer contracts for mechanical systems based on mechanical engineering knowledge and principles.
  • Lead, engineer, and design integrated mechanical or alternative systems, such as mechanical cooling systems with natural ventilation to improve energy efficiency to meet campus carbon initiatives and goals.
  • Select combined heat units, power units, co-generation equipment, or tri-generation equipment that reduces energy use or pollution based on engineering knowledge and principles.
  • Evaluate and engineer mechanical designs for energy performance or environmental impact.
  • Calculate energy losses and metrics for buildings to maximize efficiency.
  • Evaluate data, conduct calculations of emissions, and prepare reports.
  • Oversee the tracking and recording of emissions for environmental regulations reporting.
  • Reporting of emissions to all reporting agency(s) on a monthly, bi-annual, and annually as required to meet regulatory agency requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Utility Director, Electrical Engineer and Energy Manager on various projects to improve efficiencies as well as review capital project design plans, assist with programming, and manage the oversight of the utility and mechanical construction of capital administered projects.
  • Seek opportunities to understand, assist, and teach the technicians in the field on the mechanical systems and the design of the systems.
  • Lead the mechanical group in planning for campus utility infrastructure for the campus and future campus building.
  • Seek additional training in order to enhance or add capabilities
