About The Position

The Carpenter II performs skilled commercial construction work involving the repair, renovation, and maintenance of buildings and structures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Working under general supervision, this role includes tasks such as layout, framing, forming, and finishing of various construction projects. The Carpenter is responsible for ensuring that all work complies with OSHA and building code requirements, while also providing technical guidance and direction to designated personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Nine (9) years of experience or trade school and experience. (Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis)
  • Skilled in the safe operation of power tools
  • Skilled in all aspects of blueprint reading, measurements, and symbols
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations and general carpentry technology and fundamental principles of structural layouts, dimensions, and components.
  • Ability to read and interpret oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment-based visa status.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general commercial construction work including layout, repair, renovation, and maintenance of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, and screens.
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to complete construction projects.
  • Assist in the repair, construction, alteration, forming, framing, and finishing of campus buildings and facilities.
  • Perform tasks such as replacing or installing doors, windows, partitions, ceiling tiles, and floor tiles.
  • Assist with basic masonry work, including laying block, brick, stone, precast, and tile.
  • Construct forms for concrete sidewalks, pads, and foundations, and perform concrete pouring and finishing.
  • Assist in estimating the amount of lumber and other materials needed for projects.
  • Select the appropriate type of lumber and materials as directed by the supervisor.
  • Take accurate measurements and calculate the size and amount of materials needed for various construction projects.
  • Perform layout of walls, rooms, doorways, windows, sidewalks, and other building components.
  • Conduct site layout for project components, including sidewalks, slabs, foundations, and pads.
  • Work on and from scaffolding as needed to complete construction tasks.
  • Handle materials efficiently, including loading, unloading, delivering, and transporting them to job sites.
  • Ensure all materials are properly managed to facilitate smooth project execution.
  • Follow all OSHA regulations and building code requirements in the performance of construction tasks.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment, ensuring all tools and equipment are used properly.
