About The Position

Under supervision of the Shop Superintendent, the Mechanic ensures the City’s vehicles and equipment are maintained and in good working condition. Repairs and performs maintenance on mechanical and automotive equipment. Receives direct supervision from the Shop Superintendent and exercises no supervision. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Diagnose Mechanical Issues, Repair Mechanical Problems, Repair Heavy Equipment, Engine Maintenance, Repair and Replace Faulty Parts, Shop Maintenance, and Other Duties.

Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two years’ experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair, including one year of experience in a specialized area; OR , any equivalent combination of experience and training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Knowledge of fleet operations and services.
  • Knowledge of various specialized types of vehicles diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of operation and care of internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the City as they relate to equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of operating and repair characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.
  • Ability to perform major mechanical work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to perform difficult manual labor including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending and twisting.
  • Ability to learn the operating and repair characteristics of a full range of City-owned equipment.
  • Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs.
  • Ability to work productively in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to accurately determine mechanical repair needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to perform a full range of mechanical work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor repairs.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Be punctual and regular in attendance.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Texas driver’s license.
  • Must be able to attain a Class B CDL within six (6) months from the date of hire or date moved to the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer a Class B CDL.
  • May be required to obtain additional certification or licensure specific to area of assignment after date of employment at the City’s expense.
  • May occasionally be required to work on-call, evenings or weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose and locate complex mechanical difficulties in City automobiles, trucks and a variety of diesel and gasoline powered maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Utilize electronic diagnostic platforms.
  • Troubleshoot to determine extent of repairs needed.
  • Replace and repair faulty or damaged parts.
  • Determine when repairs are beyond the shop capabilities.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches on heavy and diesel equipment.
  • Tune up engines as needed.
  • Replace ignition parts.
  • Clean and adjust carburetors.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
  • Repair and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness by keeping tools, equipment, and work area clean and orderly.
  • Maintain safety at all times.
  • Repair shop equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain all work time and material records.
  • May be required to assist in the setup, teardown, and cleanup for special events and meetings.
  • May occasionally be required to work on-call, evenings or weekends.
  • Assist in other departmental operations when needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
