About The Position

The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) of the Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking Seasonal Mechanics to support the Division’s Fleet Management and Trades work program. Seasonal Mechanics assist with the routine servicing, maintenance, and repair of the vehicles, mowers, tractors, trailers, and small engine equipment used to maintain parks and recreation facilities. Work is performed at Division maintenance facilities under the direction of experienced Automotive/Equipment Mechanics and shop supervisors. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals with hands-on mechanical interest or experience, students enrolled in automotive, diesel, or small engine technology programs, and candidates seeking practical experience in fleet and equipment maintenance.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to perform the physical requirements of the work.
  • Completion of an approved mechanical apprentice program

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience performing automotive, small engine, or equipment maintenance, including experience gained through school, military service, or personal projects
  • Enrollment in or completion of an automotive, diesel, or small engine technology program
  • Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Interest in fleet maintenance, skilled trades, or parks operations

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preventive maintenance on cars, trucks, mowers, tractors, trailers, and other equipment, including oil, filter, and fluid changes and chassis lubrication
  • Assist with tire service, including inflating, rotating, changing, and repairing tires on vehicles and equipment
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of small engine equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, and blowers, including replacing broken parts and sharpening blades
  • Replace or charge batteries and replace belts, hoses, filters, lights, and other basic components under supervision
  • Assist experienced mechanics with the disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly of components during repairs
  • Clean, degrease, and paint equipment; maintain a clean and organized shop, tool room, and work area
  • Move, stage, and test drive vehicles and equipment within the facility as assigned
  • Assist with parts inventory, including receiving, stocking, and pulling parts and supplies for assigned jobs
  • Record work performed and equipment data on work orders, logs, and electronic maintenance records
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and properly and wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Report mechanical problems, safety hazards, and damaged equipment to the shop supervisor
  • Follow established safety procedures, environmental requirements for handling fluids and waste, and departmental guidelines
  • Perform related duties as assigned
