About The Position

At the Department of Public Works, we are responsible for building and maintaining a sustainable provincial infrastructure for Nova Scotians. Our Fleet Services Division is pivotal in ensuring Public Work's Fleet is running smoothly, ensuring the safety of our provincial road network. This role ensures the safety of our provincial road network by diagnosing equipment failure, repairing, rebuilding, and adjusting a variety of government mobile machinery and equipment used for road maintenance activities. You will work in a clean workspace where your ideas and input are valued. Personal protective equipment (PPE), coveralls, and shared tools are provided. An annual footwear and tool reimbursement allowance is also provided, though you must bring your own mechanical tools.

Requirements

  • Some high school education.
  • An Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Transport.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of diversified mechanical experience.
  • Must successfully complete Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) training as part of their probationary requirements.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license is a condition of employment.
  • An acceptable driver abstract must be submitted before employment begins.
  • Knowledge of computer-controlled engine diagnostic technology and competency.
  • General knowledge of computers is required.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Consistently demonstrate initiative in your role.
  • Remaining up to date in changes to equipment, methods and technology within the mechanical field.
  • Self-motivated individual who works both independently with minimal supervision.
  • Participates fully as an effective team player.
  • Consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition.
  • Hold a high standard for clients.

Nice To Haves

  • Air Brake endorsement is an asset.
  • An Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in (Heavy Duty) Equipment.
  • Air Conditioning Certification.
  • Completion of training and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • First Aid.
  • WHMIS.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses equipment failure, repairs, rebuilds and adjusts a variety of government mobile machinery and equipment used to perform road maintenance activities for both summer and winter operations.
  • Uses specialized tools and equipment located at a government facility designed and equipped for mechanical work.
  • Assists with field repairs as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required to complete equipment repairs, modifications and/or preventative maintenance.
