About The Position

The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Mechanic II (Automotive Repair Technician) to join the Fleet Services team in New Minas. This is an opportunity to become part of the team who are pivotal in ensuring the Public Works Fleet is running smoothly and safely. As the Technician, you are one of the key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial road network. You will use specialized tools and equipment located in government facilities designed and equipped for automotive body and assist with field repairs as required.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 and a Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in the Automotive Repair Trade.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of diversified mechanical experience.
  • A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license.
  • Must bring your own mechanical tools.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Professionalism and a high standard for client and customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Transport Repair.
  • Air Conditioning Certification.
  • Knowledge of computer-controlled engine diagnostic technology and competency.
  • General knowledge for determining paint codes and parts.
  • Provincial Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Transport, Autobody or Mechanical Trade.
  • WHMIS and Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and St. John Ambulance First Aid certification.
  • Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement certificate and Knowledge of MVI regulations and Wheel Installation.
  • I-Car (specific training unitized bodies).
  • Training in welding, pipe fitting, wiring and new paint types/application.
  • Forklift course.

Responsibilities

  • Complete automotive repairs and rebuild light vehicle modifications to a variety of government mobile machinery and equipment used to perform road maintenance activities for both summer and winter operations.
  • Assist with field repairs as required.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment issues.
