About The Position

The Mechanic I or II position involves the maintenance and repair of the City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock, and small equipment. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Responsibilities range from routine maintenance and repairs to assisting with special equipment builds and purchasing parts. The Mechanic II role includes additional responsibilities such as performing mechanical work on fire, medical, and rescue vehicles, directing the work of others, initiating purchase orders, and participating in the training of junior mechanics. Both positions operate in a shop environment with potential exposure to hazardous situations and adverse weather conditions, requiring significant physical exertion.

Requirements

Three years' experience in heavy mechanical work (Mechanic I).
Working knowledge of repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems (Mechanic I).
Ability to keep accurate records required (Mechanic I).
High school diploma or GED (Mechanic I).
Five years' experience in mechanical work on heavy and light duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines (Mechanic II).
Extensive knowledge in the repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems (Mechanic II).
Extensive knowledge in welding and metal fabrication, with steel and aluminum, for building, rebuilding or repair of equipment (Mechanic II).
Extensive knowledge in repair of engines, transmissions, and AC & DC electrical systems (Mechanic II).
Extensive knowledge of diagnostic computers for troubleshooting operational problems (Mechanic II).
Working knowledge using a metal lathe and other typical tools of the trade (Mechanic II).
Experience with computerized record keeping (Mechanic II).
Experience with Microsoft Office suite of tools (Mechanic II).
Technical education/training applicable to position equivalent to two-year degree (Mechanic II).

Nice To Haves

Welding experience desired (Mechanic I).
CDL preferred, but not required (Mechanic I).
Technical education/training equivalent to a two-year degree after high school diploma or GED (Mechanic II).
Working knowledge of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of heavy civil infrastructure (Mechanic II).
Experience with high pressure steam boiler units (Mechanic II).
Advanced training in skills or best practices applicable to the mechanic trade (Mechanic II).
Working knowledge of fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment (Mechanic II).
Experience fabricating customized equipment to address specialized applications (Mechanic II).
Experience with municipal public works operations (Mechanic II).
Commercial Driver's License preferred, but not required (Mechanic II).

Responsibilities

Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems.
Performs routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other maintenance on equipment.
Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property.
Builds special equipment as directed by the Lead Mechanic (Mechanic I) or as required (Mechanic II).
Purchases parts for required repairs (Mechanic I).
Initiates Purchase Orders, purchases/receives and reviews invoices for parts, materials and other supplies required for repairs and shop operations (Mechanic II).
Occasionally may operate heavy equipment and trucks, etc. as required to assist with street, sewer and water maintenance (Mechanic I).
Operates heavy equipment, trucks, etc., as required for street, sewer and water system maintenance (Mechanic II).
Performs mechanical work for fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment (Mechanic II).
Directs work of others assigned to assist with equipment maintenance and repair (Mechanic II).
Responsible for participating in the training/coaching of junior mechanics as well as other personnel assigned to help with equipment maintenance and repair (Mechanic II).
Performs other duties as directed.
