About The Position

This posting may be used to fill multiple openings for Heavy Equipment Mechanic I and Heavy Equipment Mechanic II. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic I position, with a budgeted starting salary of $24.14/hour (Grade 5: $19.31 - $28.96/hour), involves assisting in unskilled duties for the maintenance and repair of various equipment under direct supervision. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic II position, with a budgeted starting salary of $29.22/hour (Grade 7: $23.37 - $35.06/hour), involves performing both unskilled and skilled duties for the maintenance and repair of various equipment under general supervision.

Requirements

• Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: Current enrollment in a vocational school or training preferred.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: Minimum of one (1) year of experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment preferred.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: High School Diploma or GED equivalency preferred.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: Two (2) years or more experience performing mechanical repairs on all heavy-duty vehicles and equipment required.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Commercial B Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement within 120 days of hire required.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Forklift operator certification within 120 days of hire required.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic I: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck within two (2) years of hire in one (1) or more of the following required: Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, Truck Equipment Installation and Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems Installation and Repair, and/or Auxiliary/Power Systems Installation and Repair. Note: Similar or related Manufacturer Certification will be considered in lieu of the required ASE Certification.
• Heavy Equipment Mechanic II: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck within one (1) year of hire in one (1) or more of the following required: Gasoline Engines, Diesel Engines, Drive Train, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, Truck Equipment Installation and Repair, Electrical/Electronic Systems Installation and Repair, and/or Auxiliary/Power Systems Installation and Repair. Note: Similar or related Manufacturer Certification will be considered in lieu of the required ASE Certification.
• Must be able to pass post job offer physical screening.
• Must successfully pass background check.
• Must maintain licenses and certifications.

Responsibilities

• Assists in performing diagnostics, minor repairs, and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines, and major drive train components (transmissions, differentials, and drive units) under direct supervision (Mechanic I).
• Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs, and general maintenance on gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel engines and major drive train components (transmissions, differentials, and drive units) (Mechanic II).
• Assists in performing diagnostics, minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems, under direct supervision (Mechanic I).
• Performs and directs diagnostics, major and minor repairs on emissions systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, electrical circuits, air conditioning systems, air systems, and hydraulic systems (Mechanic II).
• Assists in performing safety repairs to comply with DOT regulations including air and hydraulic brake systems, repairs and adjusts lights, aligns front and rear ends; balances tires, adjusts drive lines and repairs damaged vehicle bodies (Mechanic I).

• Maintains necessary records of all work performed using computerized fleet management system.
• Completes all necessary paperwork related to job assignments and time cards.
• Assists in performing general in-shop repairs of minor system failures including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems and fuel system problems (Mechanic I).
• Performs general in-shop repairs of minor system failures including lights, brakes, brake adjustments, air system leaks, two-way radio system installations, cooling system problems and fuel system problems (Mechanic II).
• Assists in emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation; assists in on-site services (Mechanic I).
• Makes emergency road calls, which may require wrecker service or special transportation (Mechanic II).
• Assists in rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, single and twin screw rear axles and compressor systems (Mechanic I).

• Assists in performing engineering, layout, fabrication and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign on existing equipment (Mechanic I).
• Performs engineering, layout, fabrication and installation of new equipment or repairs and redesign on existing equipment (Mechanic II).
• Cleans and organizes shop and equipment, changes solvents and disposes of trash and waste as required.
• Maintains work area, tools and equipment in a clean and safe condition; responsible for reporting unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
• Orders and picks up parts.
• Assists in welding repairs (Mechanic I).
• Makes welding repairs (Mechanic II).
• Answers phone and radio calls (Mechanic II).
• Provides instruction on equipment operation (Mechanic II).
• Performs on-site service and emergency calls (Mechanic II).
