Mechanic / Fleet Technician
About The Position
The Mechanic/Fleet Technician at Francis Parker School is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and safely operating the school's fleet of buses, vans, and other support vehicles. The role ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations, maximizes fleet reliability, and minimizes downtime. As the school transitions from diesel-powered buses to electric buses over the next 5 to 10 years, the technician will also help manage the electric vehicle charging infrastructure and fleet in accordance with industry-leading practices. The position involves diagnosing and repairing vehicle systems, performing preventive maintenance, ensuring safety compliance, responding to roadside breakdowns, maintaining accurate service records, and keeping the shop safe and organized. The technician may also serve as a substitute bus driver as needed.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of professional experience maintaining heavy-duty diesel engines and/or medium- or heavy-duty trucks or buses.
- Valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Thorough knowledge of diesel engine systems and heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.
- Proficiency with computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret schematic and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to safely use tools required for heavy-duty diesel repairs.
- Familiarity with regulations, inspection requirements, environmental standards, and safety procedures applicable to school buses.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and crawl while working on vehicles.
- Ability to distinguish colors used in electrical wiring and diagnostic indicators.
- Ability to work in a maintenance shop or outdoors.
- Commitment to student safety and exceptional service.
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to identify wear, tear, and potential mechanical failures.
- Strong organization and recordkeeping skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple repairs and maintenance schedules.
- Willingness to learn emerging electric vehicle technologies.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Nice To Haves
- Technical school degree or completion of a diesel mechanic apprenticeship program.
- ASE Certifications in the Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus series.
- Brake inspector certification.
- EPA Section 609 air-conditioning certification.
- Valid Class A CDL license.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, including diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, steering, suspension, and HVAC units.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections, oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotations, and safety audits on schedule or as required by law.
- Ensure buses pass state-mandated safety inspections and promptly address defects that could compromise student safety.
- Respond to roadside calls and breakdowns, performing emergency field repairs or arranging towing.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, maintenance schedules, and inspections using physical logs or fleet management software.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment; follow OSHA standards and proper hazardous-waste disposal procedures.
- Help manage the electric vehicle charging infrastructure and fleet as the school transitions to electric buses.
- Serve as a substitute bus driver as needed.
