About The Position

The MDT Internship Program offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork within Montana's transportation projects. Interns will collaborate with area experts, gain invaluable hands-on experience, and contribute to projects that directly impact Montana's traveling public. This program focuses on training and integrating interns into our workforce of over 2,000 employees who play a vital role in ensuring safe travel for everyone. We are recruiting for summer Engineering Internship positions across various MDT offices throughout Montana. Some telework may be an option for several positions.

Requirements

Must be currently enrolled in College, University, or Tech School or in graduate school, pursuing an engineering degree at the time of application.
Prefer student applicants to be at least entering junior year or have completed at least 60 hours.
If an applicant is enrolled in a Tech School (2-year program), a minimum of 30 credit hours is required.
Related majors include but are not limited to Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
If not currently enrolled in a College, University or Tech School, applicants must be within six months of their graduation date.
Applicants with less than 60 credit hours may be considered.

Responsibilities

Perform work related to active construction projects or planning and design for future projects on Montana’s highways.
Conduct field reviews.
Write reports.
Provide construction oversight on roads and bridges.
Conduct material testing and sampling.
Perform surveying.
Engage in GIS mapping.
Assist with paving, seal and cover, striping, earthwork, gravel placement, and grading inspection.
Conduct on-site visits to active projects and monitor contractor's progress.
Assist in real-time problem solving for field construction interns.
Contribute to the design of future highway jobs for pre-construction interns.
Perform office work and field work for Construction roles (oversight of construction of roads and bridges, inspection, research new processes, procedures and materials, problem solving and developing recommendations for improvements, contract administration, specification improvements, review and interpretation of plans and designs).
Assist Geotechnical personnel with engineering design work, including subsurface investigations, laboratory testing evaluation, and geotechnical design and analysis for Geotech roles.
Conduct office work and field reviews for Materials, Surfacing Design Unit, including special projects regarding pavement design and pavement preservation.
Perform office work for Highways, Traffic and Safety and Design roles, including plan reviews, traffic counts, safety reviews, and design work.
Engage in office work for Planning, Environmental roles, which may include environmental science, geology, hydrology, ecology, natural resources planning and design, or related fields.
