About The Position

The MDT Internship Program offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork. Interns will engage in Montana’s transportation projects that have a direct impact on Montana’s traveling public. Interns will collaborate with area experts and gain invaluable hands-on experience. Our internships focus on training and integrating the interns into our current workforce of over 2,000 people across Montana who are all providing a vital role to ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely. This position will spend a large portion of their time in the field traveling to various project locations around the state to collect valuable survey data which our design teams will use for roadway and bridge designs. The Interns will get a variety of experience using a total station, robotic survey, level loops, control, GPS survey, point and line coding to collect data, and post processing of the data in the office in CAD (AutoCAD and Trimble Business Center). This is a position where the intern will get hands-on survey experience working with experienced MDT survey staff.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled or attending College, University.
• Minimum of 60 credit hours by the end of spring semester 2027.
• Resume detailing qualifications and work history.
• Cover letter of no more than two pages addressing qualifications for the position.

Nice To Haves

• Desired majors are within Civil Engineering, Land Surveying, GIS, Geospatial, and Photogrammetry.

Responsibilities

• Support full-time survey staff with control, engineering (topographic), cadastral, hydraulics, and bathymetric surveys.
• Support full-time survey staff with photogrammetry.
• Spend a large portion of time in the field traveling to various project locations around the state to collect valuable survey data.
• Collect survey data for roadway and bridge designs.
• Gain experience using a total station, robotic survey, level loops, control, and GPS survey.
• Utilize point and line coding to collect data.
• Perform post-processing of data in the office using CAD (AutoCAD and Trimble Business Center).
• Gain hands-on survey experience working with experienced MDT survey staff.
