Internship MDT Mechanic
About The Position
The MDT Internship Program offers an immersive experience in problem-solving, innovation, and teamwork, allowing interns to contribute to Montana's transportation projects that directly impact the traveling public. Interns will collaborate with area experts and gain invaluable hands-on experience. This internship focuses on training and integrating interns into a workforce of over 2,000 people across Montana dedicated to ensuring safe travel for everyone. This specific internship is for one Mechanic Intern who must be currently attending MSU Northern. The intern will work out of the MDT Havre shop from October to December 2026, with variable hours around their class schedule.
Requirements
- Student must be currently enrolled and attending MSU Northern studying mechanics, machining, welding or fabrication.
- Student required to have 30 minimum credit hours by the end of fall semester 2026.
- A resume detailing your qualifications and work history.
- A cover letter of no more than two pages addressing your qualifications for the position.
Responsibilities
- Assist with maintenance and repair of machinery & mechanical equipment (automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment)
- Adjust, diagnose, and replace nonfunctional parts of devices and control instruments
- Replace worn or defective parts
- Repair and replace tires on vehicles and equipment
- Lubricate and clean parts
- Perform some minor repairs without supervision
- Keep electronic records of time and materials, service equipment, and maintains preventive maintenance service records
- Utilizes Equipment Vehicle Maintenance Management System (EVMMS) to process work orders and update vehicle repair records
- Cleans shop area, including general janitorial work, grounds and building maintenance, and snow removal
