About The Position

Vanderheyden is seeking a High School Math Teacher to teach students with special needs the fundamentals of high school mathematics at our certified 853. This role involves delivering primary instruction, preparing lesson plans aligned with New York State Standards, and evaluating instructional materials. The teacher will be responsible for assessing and recording student academic progress, maintaining Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and Behavioral Support Plans (BSPs), and creating a safe learning environment. Additional duties include assessing and recording program outcomes, supervising teacher aides, participating in the agency's behavior management program, ensuring student safety and supervision, and enforcing the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. The position also requires initiating communication and consultation with other staff, cultivating productive relationships with agency staff, developing supportive relationships with students, and participating in school meetings such as Committee on Special Education, Department meetings, and teacher meetings. Classroom resource management is also a key responsibility. The role may involve additional tasks as business needs require.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • New York State Teacher certification in mathematics.
  • Experience teaching Math grades 7-12.
  • Must be available to work a first shift, 36-hour work week.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Willingness to respond to the needs of a culturally diverse population.
  • Ability to deal positively with changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Display a positive, professional and proactive attitude to accomplish quality work that is in line with the agency’s mission statement.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver the primary instruction to students as scheduled.
  • Prepare lesson plans and instructional material based on the New York State Standards.
  • Evaluate and recommend instructional material.
  • Evaluate and record academic progress of each student.
  • Maintain and follow the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each classified student.
  • Maintain and follow the Behavioral Support Plan (BSP) for each student.
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment within the classroom.
  • Assess and record program outcomes on the agency database.
  • Assign tasks and monitor the performance of the teacher aide.
  • Assume other responsibilities that belong to all education staff members such as participation in the behavior management program, ensuring the health, safety, and supervision of students, and enforcing the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.
  • Initiate communication and consultation with other staff in response to student concerns.
  • Cultivate and maintain productive relationships with all agency staff.
  • Develop supportive and nurturing relationships with students while consistently reinforcing program expectations.
  • Participate fully and effectively in school meetings or teams, including Committee on Special Education meetings, Department meetings, and teacher meetings.
  • Manage and maintain classroom resources.
