About The Position

The Material Handler is responsible for moving materials throughout the plant. This role supports production by delivering correct materials to machines, handling remaining materials and labels, maintaining accurate documentation, and reporting production, quality, or safety concerns to the production supervisor. The position works a 12-hour rotating shift, with day hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. or night hours from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • License to operate an electric jack and Raymond forklift.
  • Ability to operate manually and electrically powered hand trucks.
  • Ability to follow procedures and documents.

Responsibilities

  • Check the schedule and obtain the recap from the master recap stand; review it for accuracy and immediately report errors or discrepancies to the production supervisor.
  • Complete the correct documentation, such as machine sheets, shortage reports, and meters.
  • Pull materials to machines, verify operators have the correct materials, and call for the mechanic. For a new bindery job, place a copy of the master recap with the roll at the machine.
  • Periodically check the bindery small-job rack for rolls or samples that need to be run, sign them out on the log, and advise the supervisor when samples are available for setup.
  • Move the correct materials from the warehouse or staging area to machines in a timely manner so operators do not run out; advance order material through the kanban system.
  • Return leftover materials from machines to the appropriate warehouse location with a recap; remove binding straps, open boxes when necessary, dispose of materials properly, and consolidate skids containing the same material.
  • Maintain production standards.
  • Coordinate label requirements so batches and tiers of sort run in the correct mail-date order.
  • Return remaining labels from jobs removed from machines before completion to label staging, and return remaining materials to the warehouse, with a recap accompanying both.
  • Immediately report production, quality, or safety problems to the production supervisor.
  • Keep the work area neat and clean.
  • Assist in training new material handlers.
  • Remove scrap materials from the immediate area and dispose of them properly.
  • Comply with company rules, regulations, and procedures.
