Marketing Communications Manager

Aether Biomachines•Menlo Park, CA

About The Position

Aether engineers enzymes to produce materials that are difficult or impossible to make by conventional means, building on billions of years of evolution rather than inventing chemistry from scratch. The long-term goal is to make almost anything manufacturable quickly and affordably, anywhere in the world. Today our print materials ship into defense and unmanned systems, generating revenue and strong customer feedback. In parallel, our machine learning effort is assembling what we believe to be the largest protein-material binding dataset of its kind, working toward a model that can identify which proteins will produce a specified material. Aether is a Series A company with over $60 million raised and a team of ~40 very talented humans. The Role We're looking for a Marketing Communications Manager to own the full breadth of our external-facing presence, from crafting technically rigorous content to organizing our conference presence to building a social following among the engineers, operators, and procurement teams who buy materials. You'll report directly to our Head of Commercial and work closely with our founders, scientists, and engineers to translate complex science into customer-ready stories. You don't have to be an expert in every discipline, but you'll bring genuine depth in a few areas and the drive to learn the rest. You'll have significant latitude to define what great marketing looks like at Aether.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of marketing experience, ideally in deep tech, materials, biotech, defense, or advanced manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and compellingly about technically complex subjects
  • Genuine curiosity about the underlying science
  • Comfortable working autonomously in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment
  • Strong design sensibility, with the ability to produce clean, professional one-pagers and decks

Nice To Haves

  • Experience owning social channels with a track record of audience growth in a B2B context
  • Hands-on experience organizing or managing company presence at industry conferences
  • Background in or strong familiarity with additive manufacturing, composites, or advanced materials
  • Experience marketing to government and defense customers (AFWERX, DIU, DoD procurement ecosystems)
  • Familiarity with HubSpot or similar CRM for lead tracking and attribution
  • Prior experience as a first marketing hire or in a startup with a small GTM team

Responsibilities

  • Translate complex materials science, biology, and AI into crisp, compelling narratives for technical and commercial audiences, including government and defense buyers, startup engineering teams, and procurement leads
  • Write and maintain sales enablement assets: one-pagers, case studies, capability briefs, and pitch decks, in partnership with the commercial and product development teams
  • Develop a content calendar and drive consistent publishing across owned channels
  • Own our LinkedIn and other relevant channels, and grow our following among target technical and buyer communities
  • Find creative ways to share customer wins, product milestones, and company culture without giving away competitive IP
  • Track engagement metrics and iterate based on what works
  • Take ownership of industry conferences end-to-end: logistics, materials, booth presence, and speaker submissions
  • Measurably tie conference participation to qualified sales leads, in coordination with the commercial team
  • Identify the right events for our target audiences in additive and advanced manufacturing, military and defense, transportation, and other relevant market segments
  • Work closely with scientists and engineers to surface story-worthy technical milestones
  • Partner with the commercial team to ensure marketing outputs directly support pipeline generation
  • Build and maintain a lightweight asset library so the team can self-serve on collateral
