Market Analyst

Base Power Company•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

Base is hiring a Market Analyst for its Risk & Trading team. The team turns the capabilities of Base’s distributed battery fleet and the households it serves into a power business. The analyst will own profit-and-loss reporting and risk tracking across battery fleet and retail operations, build pricing models for member offers, recommend hedges, and help determine how Base can operate profitably in new markets. The initial focus is bringing these capabilities to PJM, building on Base’s existing work in ERCOT. The role is suited to someone with a few years of experience in power markets, retail energy, or a related analytical field. The analyst will make real decisions early and collaborate with Finance, Growth, and Legal & Policy. Base is a startup where priorities and responsibilities may change as business needs evolve. The company works in person and describes its pace as intense and all-in.

Requirements

  • Understand wholesale market fundamentals in ERCOT and PJM, including how power is bought, hedged, and settled.
  • Understand how retail energy pricing and operations work.
  • Understand how a retail offer makes or loses money, including its supply cost, margin, and associated risk.
  • Use distributions rather than only point forecasts when thinking about risk, and understand that power prices have heavy tails; basic statistics is sufficient.
  • Build reports and models using Python or another programming language.
  • Use SQL to retrieve data and work through analytical problems independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a retail energy provider, utility supply desk, or trading middle office.

Responsibilities

  • Build a bottoms-up retail pricing model for PJM based on Base’s ERCOT model.
  • Integrate PJM into Base’s risk system and P&L reporting to track margins and determine how to buy supply.
  • Identify new market opportunities and work with Finance, Growth, and Legal & Policy stakeholders to develop them.
  • Recommend changes to Base’s hedging strategy in ERCOT and PJM.
  • Track exposure against risk limits.
