Marine Application Specialist

Toromont CatWestphal, NS
Hybrid

About The Position

The Marine Applications Specialist works closely with Marine Account Managers and cross-functional engineering teams to develop marine propulsion and generator set solutions for retrofit and new-build projects. This role owns technical application development from early concept through proposal and project handover—creating layout drawings, preparing technical documentation, developing project costings, and building accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs). The role ensures solutions meet vessel requirements, applicable marine standards, and internal quality, safety, and compliance processes.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 - 6 years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in developing technical proposals, layouts, and BOMs for complex equipment integration projects.
  • Proficiency with drawing/design tools e.g., AutoCAD
  • Strong understanding of marine propulsion and/or power generation systems and typical vessel integration constraints.
  • Preparation of technical documentation for mechanical, electrical, and control interfaces.
  • Ability to interpret vessel drawings, P&IDs, single-line diagrams, and equipment datasheets.
  • Excellent understanding of marine propulsion and power generation systems and vessel integration constraints.
  • Willingness to travel

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingualism would be an asset

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Marine Account Managers to define customer requirements, vessel constraints, and performance targets for propulsion and genset applications (retrofit and new build).
  • Convert customer and vessel data (existing engine room arrangements, power demand, duty cycles, operating profiles) into feasible technical concepts and alternatives.
  • Support feasibility assessments including space/weight impacts, cooling/ventilation, electrical integration, fuel systems, exhaust routing, and controls/automation considerations.
  • Participate in customer meetings, vessel surveys, and technical discussions to validate scope, assumptions, and solution fit.
  • Develop preliminary and conceptual layout drawings for marine propulsion and generator set installations, including: Equipment arrangement (engine/genset, gearbox, shaft line interfaces, auxiliaries), Foundation and mounting concepts, Service access, maintenance clearances, and lifting/handling provisions, Major piping/electrical routing concepts (fuel, cooling, exhaust, ventilation).
  • Prepare and maintain technical packages (application notes, scope descriptions, compliance summaries, interface drawings, and installation guidance).
  • Coordinate review cycles and ensure drawing/document control and revision management.
  • Create project cost estimates for equipment and integration scope: major components, auxiliaries, installation allowances, engineering effort, coordination, commissioning, and contingency.
  • Build and validate accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) aligned with internal part numbering and procurement standards.
  • Consult with suppliers and internal teams (purchasing, manufacturing, service) to prepare third party equipment specifications, obtain pricing, lead times, and technical compliance data.
  • Support quotation generation with clear inclusions/exclusions and assumptions.
  • Collaborate with mechanical/electrical engineering, controls, service, commissioning, and supply chain teams to refine solutions and ensure buildability.
  • Ensure proper interfaces are defined for shipyard/customer responsibility vs. supplier responsibility.
  • Support risk reviews and change management during proposal and project execution phases.
  • Provide technical support during project kick-off and handover to execution teams, including scope clarifications and design intent.
  • Apply relevant marine rules and industry standards including Canadian Coast Guard class society expectations, electrical safety, emissions considerations where applicable).
  • Ensure solutions meet internal safety, quality, and design control requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement in estimating templates, drawing standards, BOM accuracy, and proposal technical content.
