About The Position

West Valley High School is seeking to fill 8 openings for a Marching Band Visual Assistant for the fall season, which runs from mid-August through October 31. This position offers a salary of $400 for the fall season. The assistant will play a key role in instructing basic marching skills, teaching and assisting with marching drill, and contributing to the overall visual technique and skill development of the marching band ensemble. This role also involves student supervision, serving as a district representative for transportation, and assisting the director with various aspects of band management and future planning.

Requirements

  • 2-3 years experience in a Drum and Bugle Corps or college marching band
  • Prior experience in a marching band or Drum Corps leadership position
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and lead high school students
  • Specific expertise in area of visual instruction (basic marching skills) for high school students
  • Experience working in a collaborative teaching environment
  • Respectful / professional demeanor with students and marching band staff

Responsibilities

  • Attend Summer Marching Band Camp
  • Attend all marching band rehearsals (Tuesday evenings 5:30 – 8:00pm / Thursday afternoon 2:45 – 5:00pm)
  • Attend home football games (4-5 home games per season)
  • Attend marching competitions as scheduled by the director (usually 3 October competitions yearly)
  • Attend fall parade performances (Yakima Sunfair and Veteran’s Day Parades)
  • Attend any additional marching band rehearsals (typically one September Saturday rehearsal)
  • Assist the director with student supervision and instructional duties at rehearsals and performances
  • Serve as a district representative and supervisor on district transportation to away events (Parades and competitions)
  • Primary teaching responsibility in area of instructing basic marching skills (visual technique) and teaching / assisting marching drill to the ensemble
  • Assist the director in monitoring progress of the ensemble in terms of visual technique and skill development
  • Assist the director with maintaining adequate teaching pacing of the ensemble relative to the October competition season
  • Assess competition judge’s written and oral critiques in order to further develop the ensemble’s visual technique and future skill development
  • Serve as a reference in terms of marching visual technique for the ensemble members
  • Assist the director in establishing a high achievement level in terms of visual marching technique for the ensemble
  • Serve as a guide for the student drum majors assisting in their leadership development – stretching exercises, physical training of the ensemble, basic marching technique instruction, and conducting
  • Assist the director in planning for the future – skill assessment, teaching strategies, and show selection
