Marching Band Percussion Assistant @ West Valley High School
About The Position
This position serves as the assistant to the Percussion Caption Head for the West Valley High School (WVHS) student Percussion. The role involves attending summer marching band camp, percussion rehearsals, and learning all color guard choreography to instruct the student color guard with a high level of competence and skill. The assistant will monitor the progress of the color guard, adapt instruction as necessary, and assist with uniform sizing and ordering. They will also help maintain teaching pacing relative to the competition season, assess critiques to develop technique, and coordinate schedules with the color guard instructor. The position requires attendance at all marching band rehearsals, home football games, marching competitions, fall parade performances, and any additional marching band rehearsals. The assistant will also help with student supervision and instructional duties, and serve as a district representative on district transportation to away events.
Requirements
- 2-3 years experience in a successful high school color guard, college marching band, or Drum and Bugle Corps
- Prior experience in a leadership position
- Demonstrated ability to teach and lead high school students
- Specific expertise in area of color guard instruction for high school students
- Experience working in a collaborative setting
- Ability to learn choreography quickly and efficiently and to teach / adapt for high school students
- Respectful / professional demeanor with students and marching band staff
Responsibilities
- Serve as the assistant to the Percussion Caption Head for the WVHS student Percussion
- Attend Summer Marching Band Camp
- Attend percussion rehearsals
- Learn all color guard choreography and instruct the student color guard with a high level of competence and skill
- Monitor progress of the color guard and adapt instruction and content as necessary to achieve a high level of performance for the ensemble and the individual members alike
- Assist the director and Percussion Caption Head with uniform sizing and ordering uniforms and equipment
- Assist the director and Percussion Caption Head with maintaining adequate teaching pacing of the Percussion relative to the October competition season
- Assess competition judge’s written and oral critiques in order to further develop the Percussion’s visual and performance technique and future skill development
- Work with the director to develop a schedule in coordination with the color guard instructor
- Attend all marching band rehearsals
- Attend home football games
- Attend marching competitions as scheduled by the director
- Attend fall parade performances
- Attend any additional marching band rehearsals
- Assist the director with student supervision and instructional duties at rehearsals and performances
- Serve as a district representative and supervisor on district transportation to away events (Parades and competitions)
