Marching Band Color Guard Caption Head @ West Valley High School
About The Position
This position serves as the primary staff member for the student color guard (flag ensemble) at West Valley High School. The role involves attending summer marching band camp, leading sectional rehearsals, and instructing students in color guard choreography with a high level of competence and skill. The Caption Head will monitor student progress, adapt instruction as needed, and assist the director with various tasks including uniform management, teaching pacing, and assessing competition critiques to enhance visual and performance techniques. Collaboration with the director and assistant instructor on scheduling and student supervision is also a key part of the role. The position requires attendance at all marching band rehearsals, home football games, competitions, and parade performances. Additionally, the Caption Head will serve as a district representative for student supervision and transportation to away events.
Requirements
- 2-3 years experience in a Drum and Bugle Corps, college marching band, or related experience
- Prior experience in a leadership position with a collegiate marching band, Drum Corps, or related experience
- Demonstrated ability to teach and lead high school students
- Specific expertise in area of color guard instruction for high school students
- Experience working in a collaborative teaching environment
- Ability to learn choreography quickly and efficiently and to teach / adapt for high school students
- Experience writing / creating color guard choreography
- Respectful / professional demeanor with students and marching band staff
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary staff member for the student color guard (flag ensemble)
- Attend Summer Marching Band Camp
- Attend Wednesday afternoon color guard sectional rehearsals
- Learn all color guard choreography and instruct the student color guard with a high level of competence and skill
- Monitor progress of the color guard and adapt instruction and content as necessary to achieve a high level of performance for the ensemble and the individual members alike
- Assist the director with uniform sizing and ordering uniforms and equipment
- Assist the director with maintaining adequate teaching pacing of the color guard relative to the October competition season
- Assess competition judge’s written and oral critiques in order to further develop the color guard’s visual and performance technique and future skill development
- Assist the director in monitoring progress of the color guard in terms of flag skill techniques, visual ensemble (marching) skills, and future skill development
- Work with the director to develop a schedule in coordination with the color guard assistant instructor
- Attend all marching band rehearsals
- Attend home football games
- Attend all marching competitions as scheduled by the director
- Attend all fall parade performances
- Attend any additional marching band rehearsals
- Assist the director with student supervision and instructional duties at rehearsals and performances
- Serve as a district representative and supervisor on district transportation to away events (Parades and competitions)
