Manufacturing Test Engineer

Formlabs•Somerville, MA

About The Position

Formlabs is hiring a Manufacturing Test Engineer to design and develop manufacturing test systems that move electromechanical products from prototype through high-volume production. The role combines hardware and software development, including test and calibration hardware and infrastructure, and works closely with manufacturing and operations teams to make production data visible and actionable across the global supply chain. The engineer will build and support systems used to test, calibrate, and manufacture printers and related products at scale. The role suits someone who values system reliability and product quality, can work in a fast-paced environment, and is comfortable debugging prototype setups and production-line issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Robotics, Mechatronics, or another engineering discipline, with professional experience combining hardware design and software integration.
  • Experience developing and implementing computer vision and machine learning algorithms.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including experience designing or supporting test jigs, fixtures, or automation tools deployed in manufacturing environments.
  • Good understanding of software integration with embedded systems and electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Ability to build robust, maintainable systems and debug issues in prototype setups and on production lines.
  • Clear communication, proactive project and priority management, and ability to thrive in environments requiring quick decisions and knowledge sharing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with manufacturing teams on complex products, including collaboration with third-party contract manufacturers and new product introduction build cycles.
  • Experience developing and maintaining production-grade code shared across teams.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably OnShape, and mechanical design.
  • Full-stack web development experience, including React/JavaScript, DevOps, Docker, and microservices.
  • Experience with C or C++ on microcontrollers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and validate hardware and software solutions for electromechanical factory test systems used for product calibration and testing from prototype through mass production.
  • Develop Python-based test scripts and integrate hardware interfaces, including sensors, actuators, and motion systems.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing engineering teams to define test strategies and deploy robust, scalable tools across production sites.
  • Build and support internal tools and services for collecting, storing, and analyzing manufacturing data, including calibration results, EMS logs, configuration data, and test data.
  • Apply data science tools to analyze manufacturing performance and inform design, quality, and operational decisions.
  • Improve development, testing, and deployment processes to streamline software releases across global factories.

Benefits

  • Robust equity program through RSUs.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) matching and access to financial advisors.
