About The Position

Exponent is seeking a Managing Engineer for its Metallurgical & Corrosion Engineering Practice in Chicago, IL or Warrenville, IL. This role involves developing business and expanding the practice in a specific technical area. The position requires identifying and securing new business opportunities, significantly increasing Exponent's metallurgical and corrosion engineering consulting efforts, particularly in laboratory-based analysis, and analyzing safety, performance, and reliability issues using field inspections, engineering analysis, and experimental testing.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
  • At least 5 – 10 years of related professional experience
  • Licensure as a professional engineer (PE or P. Eng) in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline is required.
  • Specialized knowledge of operating a laboratory with materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, FIB, TEM, EDS, XPS, Auger, SIMS, FTIR, acoustic microscopy, X-ray)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently or in multidisciplinary teams
  • A record of professional papers and presentations, and a proven record of dedication to quality and accuracy
  • Presently legally authorized to work in the US, no immigration sponsorship or visa processing required

Nice To Haves

  • Litigation experience as a testifying expert is preferred but not required.
  • Business development experience with a proven track record
  • The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in their field
  • Ability to attract projects to support full-time staff

Responsibilities

  • Identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities
  • Significantly increasing Exponent's metallurgical and corrosion engineering consulting efforts, particularly in laboratory-based analysis
  • Analyzing a wide variety of safety, performance, and reliability issues related to metallurgical and corrosion engineering using field inspections, engineering analysis and experimental testing
  • Manage and develop a group of highly motivated individuals
