Manager, Technical Product Management – Autonomy Integration

Zoox•Foster City, CA
•$231,000 - $281,000

About The Position

Zoox is operating a public-facing commercial robotaxi service and is expanding into new cities. The autonomy software system is organized into driving behavior clusters, each owned by a Technical Product Manager accountable for readiness for live commercial service. The Manager, Technical Product Management leads a team of 4–5 Senior- and Staff-level Technical Product Managers and owns a portfolio-level view of readiness, risk, and roadmap health across the clusters they manage. The role sits at the intersection of autonomy software engineering, product, metrics, safety, and user research, and supports expansion into new cities and driving domains. The manager hires, coaches, and develops the team; sets strategy and prioritization for defining, subdividing, and sequencing driving behavior clusters; and guides cross-cluster technical and product decisions. The role establishes portfolio KPIs and readiness metrics, upholds defensible safety-critical release criteria, and ensures rider feedback, field observations, and incident learnings inform roadmaps. It also manages team capacity and cluster assignments and communicates status, risks, and trade-offs to engineering leadership, safety, and company executives while maintaining effective cross-functional partnerships.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of technical product management experience.
  • At least 3 years of direct experience managing a team of 4 or more technical product managers.
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, coaching, and managing performance, including developing individual contributors into more senior roles.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal partners and users to solve complex cross-functional problems and use influence to achieve strong outcomes.
  • Ability to distill ambiguous problem spaces into compelling product visions and translate them into team-level frameworks.
  • A degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience, with sufficient technical depth to engage in architecture and trade-off discussions across perception, planning/controls, or comparable technical domains.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical product management experience in autonomy, robotics, computer vision, or another safety-critical or complex software domain.
  • Experience developing robotics products or autonomous vehicle software.
  • Background in computer vision, perception, or ML-driven systems.
  • Experience building or scaling a product management function through a transition from research to commercial launch.
  • Experience in another regulated or safety-critical industry, such as aerospace, medical devices, or industrial automation.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, manage, mentor, and develop a team of 4–5 Technical Product Managers, fostering ownership, rigor, and continuous improvement.
  • Own the strategy and prioritization framework for defining driving behavior clusters, dividing them into sub-clusters, and sequencing them against company milestones; align team roadmaps with this strategy.
  • Guide cross-cluster trade-offs and technical ambiguity, and coach direct reports on readiness criteria, metrics design, and stakeholder conflicts.
  • Ensure each cluster has well-reasoned and defensible go/no-go release criteria before it ships to the live fleet.
  • Establish and monitor portfolio-level KPIs and readiness metrics, maintaining high standards for how the team defines and tracks them.
  • Ensure rider feedback, field operations observations, and on-road incident learnings are incorporated into cluster roadmaps and readiness bars.
  • Manage cluster assignments and team capacity, rebalancing ownership as the cluster map and business evolve.
  • Communicate cross-cluster status, risks, and trade-offs through clear, data-driven updates to autonomy engineering leadership, safety, and company executives.
  • Serve as a key interface between the team and autonomy software engineering, metrics, safety, and user research leadership to promote two-way collaboration while minimizing churn to engineering teams.
