About The Position

The Manager of Volunteer Services plays a pivotal role in enhancing the impact of volunteerism by setting the strategic direction for the Volunteer Services Department. This position is responsible for leading and overseeing all Volunteer Services programs, ensuring volunteer initiatives align with the organization's mission. The role manages volunteer recruitment, engagement, and disaster preparedness efforts across multiple counties. The role includes leading strategic initiatives, developing curriculum, helping with funding solicitation and deliverables, managing Days of Service, overseeing the online volunteer matching portal, and developing and leading corporate engagement projects. To prepare for disasters, the Manager takes a lead role as one of CVNL’s representatives on one or more Community Agencies Active in Disaster cohorts (COAD/VOAD). This role is instrumental in ensuring that CVNL fulfills its mission of equipping strong nonprofits with confident and prepared leaders and volunteers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably in volunteer services, community engagement, disaster preparedness, or related programs.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience, with demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to motivate, develop, and manage staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of volunteer engagement and management best practices, with a commitment to staying current on emerging trends and industry standards.
  • Strong project management skills, including experience leading complex initiatives and utilizing project management tools and software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, volunteer management platforms, and other relevant technology tools.
  • Experience using social media, digital communications, and marketing tools to support outreach, engagement, and program goals.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact professionally, respectfully, and effectively with clients, volunteers, staff, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, identities, abilities, and lived experiences.
  • Experience with budgeting, financial tracking, data collection, and program reporting.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and supporting community events, training, or volunteer engagement activities.
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid CA driver’s license, and proof of automobile insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual Spanish language skills are highly preferred.
  • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certification is highly preferred. Candidates who are not currently CERT certified must be willing to complete CERT training upon hire, with training provided and supported by CVNL.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of the Volunteer Services Department strategy and contribute to long-term planning and program development.
  • Align volunteer programs with the organization’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and supervision to department staff while fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee data collection in Volunteer Services to inform strategic decisions and program improvements.
  • Directly manage department staff.
  • Oversee the recruitment and management of volunteers through presentations, outreach activities, and the VolunteerNow.org portal.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase engagement with the volunteer portal, expanding participation among volunteers and community organizations.
  • Plan and implement major Days of Service and corporate engagement projects.
  • Ensure accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of volunteer engagement metrics.
  • Foster strategic partnerships with volunteer groups (schools, community groups, corporations, faith-based organizations, etc.).
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the department's budget in collaboration with organizational leadership, ensuring effective stewardship of resources and alignment with program goals.
  • Support funding development efforts by cultivating partnerships, contributing to grant proposals, and ensuring fulfillment of grant and contract deliverables.
  • Monitor departmental budgets and provide financial and programmatic reporting to organizational leadership.
  • Build and maintain relationships with senior stakeholders, including board members, major donors, and corporate partners.
  • Oversight of the Solano County Contract ensuring adherence to deliverables and assisting in meeting engagement goals.
  • Represent CVNL in community partnerships, collaborative initiatives, conferences, and public engagement opportunities.
  • Advocate for volunteer services and the organization's mission at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Support Emergency Volunteer Center (EVC) operations when activated, including volunteer recruitment, registration, interviewing, placement, tracking, and reporting.
  • Support donated goods management activities, including intake, sorting, referral, and coordination with community partners.
  • Manage disaster-related contracts with local government agencies and funders.
  • Serve as representative with local COADs (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) and VOADs (Voluntary Organizations Action in Disaster).
  • Develop relationships with emergency management personnel and conduct relevant training.
  • Develop and deliver disaster preparedness training programs, oversee training logistics, and track, evaluate, and report participant engagement and survey results.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with nonprofit organizations, service providers, government agencies, and community stakeholders to advance program goals and community impact.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to develop and implement effective messaging and strategic campaigns that support organizational priorities and Volunteer Services initiatives.
  • Design and deliver volunteer management and engagement trainings, workshops, and peer learning opportunities, including the Volunteer Engagement Training Program and Volunteer Manager Peer Learning Network, to strengthen volunteer leadership and best practices across the community.
  • Assist Events Team as appropriate and needed to secure Volunteer nominations and/or volunteers for events.
  • Foster relationships with nonprofit leaders and staff to encourage participation in corporate volunteer projects, Learning & Leadership programs, consulting and executive search services, and opportunities to share best practices and strengthen organizational capacity.
  • Assist in the planning and promotion of Volunteer Services by representing CVNL at relevant community forums and events.
