About The Position

The Manager, Energy Origination develops and executes power strategies for prospective data center developments. The role leads utility and power-market due diligence, builds relationships with utilities and other industry stakeholders, identifies scalable and commercially viable power solutions, and originates, structures, and negotiates utility service, energy supply, and infrastructure agreements across Montera’s development portfolio. Success requires developing credible power strategies, assessing and communicating risks and opportunities, advancing external negotiations, and delivering decision-ready recommendations that support investment decisions and customer commitments. The role leads energy origination and site strategy, including site-specific approaches to utility service, market supply, grid infrastructure, onsite or bridge generation, natural gas supply and pipeline access, storage, and other potential solutions. It evaluates power capacity, schedules, costs, reliability, infrastructure, interconnection pathways, commercial risks, and the financial and investment implications of utility and technical findings. The manager owns a prioritized pipeline of energy-qualified sites and commercial opportunities, and presents recommendations and decision materials to leadership. The position also monitors power markets, utilities, regulation, tariffs, transmission, generation, and large-load policy; leads commercial and financial analysis of power solutions; and coordinates utility solicitations, partner outreach, and regulatory engagement. Working across development, finance, legal, engineering, construction, operations, sustainability, and customer-facing teams, the manager advances solutions that improve site economics and speed to power and establishes repeatable standards for energy origination and utility diligence. This is primarily a remote role when the employee is not traveling or attending required in-person activities. Travel is approximately 15% and may include domestic and, as needed, international destinations, site visits, meetings, conferences, and visits to Montera’s main office or other designated locations. The work primarily involves office and computer-based tasks.

  • 10 or more years of experience in energy origination, utility strategy, power marketing, project development, power infrastructure, large-load development, data centers, utilities, or independent power production.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex power opportunities from early diligence through commercial definition, including utility applications, studies, schedules, risks, and milestones.
  • Strong knowledge of electric utilities, transmission and distribution systems, generation, grid capacity, interconnection, tariffs, rate structures, energy procurement, and large-load requirements.
  • Knowledge of U.S. organized power markets and regulated and competitive utility structures, with deep understanding of power generation economics.
  • Experience advising and influencing utilities, hyperscalers, data center operators, developers, or other large-load stakeholders on energy investments and long-term power strategies.
  • Strong financial-modeling skills and commercial judgment, including independent evaluation of generation assets, PPAs, microgrids, behind-the-meter solutions, pricing, risk allocation, and contract terms.
  • Strong executive communication and stakeholder-management skills; ability to set priorities, lead cross-functional workstreams, make recommendations with incomplete information, and appropriately escalate material decisions.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and reliable remote-work setup, including consistent internet access, availability during working hours, and a workspace suitable for focused work, confidential conversations, and virtual meetings.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15% of the time for meetings, conferences, site visits, customer or partner engagements, and internal team activities.

  • Lead utility solicitations, partner outreach, commercial evaluations, and regulatory engagement in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and recommend approaches to improve site economics and speed to power, including phased service, flexible or curtailable load arrangements, customer-funded infrastructure, onsite generation, storage, and renewable supply.
  • Coordinate cross-functional stakeholders across Development, finance, legal, engineering, construction, operations, sustainability, and customer-facing teams to align energy decisions with investment and delivery priorities.
  • Establish standards and quality expectations for energy origination and utility diligence, identify gaps, and implement corrective actions and repeatable portfolio practices.
