Manager, ASE Efficiency

Apple•Culver City, CA

About The Position

Across Apple Services Engineering (ASE), efficiency is an essential part of environmental sustainability and optimal resource utilization. The team focuses on ML-driven forecasting, capacity planning, resource optimization, and cost modeling across ASE’s large-scale services. The Manager, ASE Efficiency will help improve the efficiency of Apple’s cloud services through analysis of infrastructure usage patterns and data-driven capacity planning that supports scalability and reliability while minimizing resource waste. The role connects application and business demand to infrastructure requirements and uses measured utilization to improve forecasting and optimization decisions. The manager will lead and help optimize the design, deployment, and operation of services across ASE, working with service owners, infrastructure and SRE teams, capacity planners, data scientists, and finance partners. Responsibilities include developing strategies aligned with cloud sustainability and resource-utilization principles, solving large-scale optimization problems for capacity allocation and workload scheduling under reliability and latency constraints, and integrating solutions into reusable software and tools. The work is intended to improve service performance and resource utilization, influence service unit costs, and support the customer experience.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in large-scale cloud services or similar environments.
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Strong software engineering background and experience with ML-based modeling, time-series forecasting, and data-driven decision-making for cloud services.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively to cross-functional teams.
  • Hands-on experience with platform observability tools to gain insight into service performance and drive optimizations.
  • Experience developing cost models and strategies for software services to support optimal resource utilization and cost-effectiveness.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience applying classical optimization techniques to real-world systems or infrastructure problems.
  • Demonstrable experience in capacity planning and resource optimization using machine learning and/or optimization techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of machine learning pipelines and service monitoring tools.
  • PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with a focus on machine learning, optimization, or large-scale distributed systems.
