About The Position

The purpose of the Manager Accounting II position is to manage and develop a team of individuals who perform tasks associated with the company’s accounting close and financial reporting processes. In this role, the Manager Accounting II is responsible for ensuring that the accounting impacts of the company’s business activities and transactions are understood and properly recorded to the general ledger, and that such accounting impacts and related variances to budget and prior year results, if applicable, are clearly explained and properly presented in internal and/or external financial reports as needed. The Manager Accounting II is also responsible for ensuring that the team, including the outsourced team, performs its tasks in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with published deadlines while strictly adhering to company policies and controls. The role is critical to support Fuel Inventory and Settlements across the organization, ensuring timely payment of fuel and accurate recordkeeping utilizing Comtrac and CXL systems. The Manager Accounting II will support the development of the team and work closely with offshore accounting personnel from our partnership with E&Y. This Manager Accounting II role will promote continuous process improvement, drive efficiencies, and lead by example through embracing and exemplifying Duke’s values. The role is a single contact for Rates, FP&A, Treasury, and other organizations on any and all accounting matters related to the business they support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Finance, Accounting, or other related degree
  • Eight (8) years related work experience

Nice To Haves

  • Prior Big 4 or other public accounting experience
  • Prior experience with rate filings (e.g., preparing, interpreting, and/or accounting for base rate, fuel, rider, and deferral request filings)
  • Experience with Peoplesoft and OneStream
  • Knowledge of FIHUB Cube reporting
  • Experience in preparing FERC annual and quarterly reports
  • Experience in an accounting research role; writing accounting position papers
  • CPA license
  • Knowledge of regulated utility accounting and ratemaking principles
  • Familiarity with FERC chart of accounts
  • Extensive experience with accounting systems/applications
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to pertinent business issues
  • Effective interpersonal skills, team oriented
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization

Responsibilities

  • Understand assigned responsibilities, relevant GAAP and FERC accounting guidance, and operational matters that affect the accounting cycle
  • Review month-end deliverables (primarily journal entries)
  • Review account reconciliations
  • Work with the appropriate parties to resolve accounting issues as they arise
  • Ensure SOX control structure is in place and monitored with respect to the close process
  • Prepare or review documentation for accounting conclusions on accounting matters
  • Ensure strict adherence to closing deadlines
  • Review monthly internal financial reports as assigned
  • Review quarterly SEC and FERC financial reports, including supporting schedules
  • Review periodic state regulatory financial reports
  • Ensure SOX control structure is in place and monitored with respect to the reporting process
  • Work with independent auditors on annual audited financial statements
  • Work with the appropriate parties to resolve issues as they arise
  • Develop and coach internal staff, and foster knowledge sharing with the dedicated offshore team
  • Support regulatory filing efforts including rate cases and rider filings for retail business
  • Support fuel audits and data requests
  • Lead and/or participate in efficiency and process improvement efforts
  • Assist with special projects (e.g., new revenue recognition and lease standards)
  • Research regulatory matters and related impacts
