About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of maintenance and minor construction in the upkeep of the City's parks, streets and buildings. This is the entry or junior level of craft apprenticeship. Incumbents may perform any, or any combination of, duties of the senior level class but are in a training capacity and, therefore, are held only to a moderate standard of proficiency. To be considered for this opportunity, applicants must submit a detailed application, respond to supplemental questions, and attach required documentation. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience performing maintenance work, extensive physical labor, or related qualifying experience.
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of a Class B license is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Breaks, cuts, lays and finishes asphalt and concrete materials in the patching and repair of street, curbs and sidewalks.
  • Removes damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters, using cement saws, jack hammers and hand tools.
  • Builds forms, pours and finishes concrete.
  • Spreads asphalt screening, oil, gravel, sand and other surfacing materials.
  • Loads and unloads street maintenance materials.
  • Operates a variety of trucks and other street maintenance equipment.
  • Drives a truck to haul materials for a variety of jobs.
  • Assists with the trimming of trees.
  • Installs or repairs street signs.
  • Installs and moves traffic signs.
  • Maintains the storm drain system and clears debris from culverts and ditches.
  • Picks up sweeper dumps, garden refuse and other materials.
  • May operate heavier equipment used in maintenance and street repair.
  • Performs heavy manual labor.
  • Keeps tools and equipment in clean and safe working condition.
  • Controls traffic in the vicinity of work projects.
  • Trims, cuts down and removes trees and shrubs.
  • Maintains City parks, roadways, traffic lights, storm drains, buildings and other City owned facilities.
  • Supervises, trains and reviews the work of assigned personnel.
  • Maintains basic records and files.
  • Performs a variety of difficult and complex gardening, park, street and building maintenance work.
  • Reads and interprets work plans and blueprints.
  • Performs activities requiring strength and agility.
  • Works at heights and in close quarters.
  • Operates moderately heavy power grounds, street repair and building maintenance equipment.
  • Performs heavy manual labor.
  • Follows oral and written directions.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Reads and writes at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Responds to emergency leaks and ruptures of irrigation pipes and broken sprinkler heads.
  • Devises methods to complete assignments and control vehicular traffic.
