About The Position

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, storm drains, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, traffic signs, pavement markings, and other public service facilities. This full-time position works 40 hours per week and reports to the Crew Leader or other appropriate supervisor. The position is classified and non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. A Civil Service examination is required for this position.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
One year of experience in street maintenance, street construction, traffic painting, sign installation, or related work.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
Ability to remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance plan.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License that must be maintained throughout employment.
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to complete routine forms and perform basic addition and subtraction.
Ability to safely operate motor vehicles, snowplows, hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships.
Ability to identify unsafe or unusual conditions and take appropriate action.
Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, including work in adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

Operates street-painting equipment and spray guns to paint street lines, crosswalks, and other pavement markings.
Installs guardrails, traffic markers, delineators, reflectors, street signs, and signposts.
Fabricates new signs and cleans, maintains, or replaces existing signs.
Repairs potholes and damaged street surfaces.
Cuts or removes loose material and applies tack coats, asphalt, crack seals, thermoplastic overlays, and slurry seals.
Shovels, spreads, rakes, tamps, and rolls asphalt for street patching and resurfacing.
Repairs or replaces damaged sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and guardrails.
Removes old surfaces and pours, forms, and finishes concrete.
Sets up barricades and traffic cones and directs traffic around work areas.
Maintains City rights-of-way by removing rubbish and debris, cleaning catch basins, mowing grass, trimming trees, and controlling weeds.
Trims trees and vegetation to maintain a clear line of sight around traffic signs.
Participates in leaf collection, snow removal, and ice-control operations.
Washes, cleans, paints, and performs preventive maintenance on Street Department vehicles and equipment.
Operates vehicles, hand and power tools, dump trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, front-end loaders, street sweepers, asphalt pavers, air compressors, and other maintenance equipment.
Attends required meetings, training programs, and seminars.
Follows all job-safety requirements and applicable OSHA standards.
Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
