About The Position

The City of Goleta is seeking qualified applicants for a Maintenance Worker I/II position within the Public Works Department, specifically for the Parks and Open Space Division. This role offers the potential for placement at either the Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II level, depending on the candidate's qualifications. The recruitment aims to fill one vacancy and may establish a list for future openings. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, possess a strong work ethic, provide excellent customer service, and be dedicated to maintaining the City's parks and open spaces for the community. A valid California driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory. The position requires availability for occasional nights, weekends, and emergency call-backs. Bilingual pay may be available for certified individuals. The selection process includes an oral panel interview, a practical examination, and contingent employment offers are subject to successful physical and drug screening, and a criminal history background check.

Requirements

High school education or equivalent.
Six months of experience assisting in street maintenance, construction, and/or grounds maintenance.
Knowledge of basic maintenance methods and techniques.
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance activities.
Knowledge of techniques and procedures in basic carpentry, metal, masonry, painting and mechanical work.
Ability to operate power tools and make minor repairs to equipment.
Ability to perform minor maintenance activities related to the area of assignment.
Ability to repair facilities and operate maintenance equipment.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
Ability to work safely and efficiently.
Ability to operate vehicles as well as general and specialized job-related equipment including hydraulic jackhammers and tampers.
Ability to perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Nice To Haves

Placement may be at either the Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II level, depending on qualifications.
This recruitment may also establish a list to fill future vacancies.
Candidates must be available to work occasional nights, weekends, and respond to emergency call-backs.
Depending on the needs of the department and subject to certification, this position may be eligible for Bilingual Pay, currently at $65 per pay period.
This recruitment will include an oral panel interview and practical examination.
Employment offers will be contingent upon a successful physical and drug screening, as well as a criminal history background check.

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of park maintenance duties including trimming shrubs, pulling weeds, mowing and edging lawns, raking recreation areas, watering plants and trees, and sweeping.
Inspect park playground equipment to ensure safety and remove potential hazards.
Collect litter from grounds and empty trash containers throughout assigned park areas.
Patrol and inspect parks to ensure the safety of public facilities, identify potential safety hazards, and report them to a supervisor for action.
Assist in the installation of park improvements such as picnic tables, barbecues, bleachers, and trashcan holders.
Inspect, maintain, and repair playground equipment.
Participate in integrated pest management operations as needed.
Assist in preparing the City for special projects and events.
Clean and stock park bathrooms.
Participate in setting forms, mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete.
Participate in the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
Provide vacation and temporary relief as required.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
