About The Position

This position involves performing a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of City wastewater and storm water systems, facilities, and related equipment. Responsibilities include operating power-driven and heavy equipment, ensuring proper operation of collection and distribution systems, unclogging lines, inspecting and repairing mechanical and electrical malfunctions, excavating ditches, and maintaining records. The role requires adherence to health and safety regulations and involves working in both indoor and outdoor environments with potential exposure to fumes, odors, and hazardous materials.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program and one year of general maintenance and construction experience (for Worker I).
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program and two years experience at the level of Wastewater Maintenance Worker I (for Worker II).
  • Valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement (required within 12 months of employment for Worker I, possessed for Worker II).
  • Possession of a Collection System Maintenance Grade I certificate issued by CWEA (for Worker II).
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of City wastewater and storm water systems, facilities, and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and piping systems including valves, line-ups, gauges, and meters.
  • Knowledge of operation of power-driven and heavy equipment used in system maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of City wastewater and storm water systems, facilities, and related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of City wastewater and storm water systems, treatment facilities, and related equipment.
  • Participate in construction projects and system installations as requested.
  • Assure proper operation and water flow of City storm, collection, and distribution systems.
  • Unclog sewer and storm lines and laterals as necessary.
  • Utilize high-pressure power cleaners, rodders, hydraulic hoses, and vacuums to clean and remove sewage from sewer lines.
  • Clean up sanitary sewer overflows and sewage spills as requested.
  • Inspect wastewater facility, lift station, and storm pump equipment and systems including valves, pumps, motors, tanks, and gauges.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
  • Replace system components as needed.
  • Operate a variety of power-driven and heavy equipment including tractors, skip-loaders, backhoes, jack hammers, welding equipment, compressors, forklifts, and hand and power tools.
  • Drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Excavate ditches to access underground equipment and systems.
  • Repair and replace piping as necessary.
  • Inspect sewer lines utilizing smoke testing methods or video cameras to assure proper operation.
  • Inspect commercial grease traps for proper operation.
  • Maintain related records and report violations.
  • Utilize City maps, blueprints, metal detectors, and line locators to locate lines, piping, and utility-holes.
  • Map system schematics and utility-hole locations as necessary.
  • Operate irrigation pumps to discharge treated water.
  • Assist with the collection of water samples, moving of chlorine cylinders, and monitoring of meter readings.
  • Communicate with City personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
  • Maintain routine records related to assigned activities.
  • Assist other maintenance departments with construction projects as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
