About The Position

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of City parks, recreational areas, public grounds, sidewalks, medians, street signs and markings, and streets. Duties include unskilled to semiskilled maintenance and repair work, as well as operating light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment. Work may be performed independently or as part of a crew, often outdoors and requiring physical labor. We’re looking for someone who takes pride in their work, maintains a high attention to detail, and isn’t afraid to put in the effort to get the job done right. The ideal candidate is dependable, takes initiative when needed, and works well both independently and as part of a team. The Parks Division is looking for dedicated and motivated individuals to join our team as we care for and maintain over 52.5 acres of stunning City Parks, including 12 picturesque parks and 42 acres of scenic landscape boulevards. With approximately 12,000 trees adorning our City streets, our staff plays a crucial role in preserving the greenery that defines our community. As part of our team, you'll be responsible for maintaining city-owned pathways, tending to 38 easements and small landscape islands, and ensuring the overall well-being of our parks and green spaces. Requirements

  • Maintenance Worker I: Minimum of one year of experience in construction or maintenance work
  • Maintenance Worker I: High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Maintenance Worker I: Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record
  • Maintenance Worker II: Three years of experience in construction or maintenance work.
  • Maintenance Worker II: High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Maintenance Worker II: Must possess and maintain a Class B California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record
  • Uses and purposes of various hand tools employed in basic laboring; safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and heavy equipment; the operation and maintenance of a variety of light and heavy equipment.
  • Parks: Knowledge of sweeping, trash pick-up, trash removal and hauling, leaf removal, pruning, tree trimming, and other routine park maintenance work.
  • Ability to perform general manual labor duties related to landscape maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the safe use of parks related tools and machinery.
  • Perform routine maintenance activities related to park or facility maintenance; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work with the variety of tools related to maintenance; learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment; and perform heavy manual labor.; work indoors or outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

  • A MWI who has passed probation and worked for the City for two continuous years in the MWI position with satisfactory annual performance evaluations may move to the MWII class – regardless of openings in the classification – if the employee obtains a Class B California Driver’s License and at least one of the following: Qualified Applicator Certification CWEA Grade 1 Maintenance Superintendents Association – Public Works Technician

Responsibilities

  • Inspect city owned buildings, park grounds, structures, medians, and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.
  • Clean and clear park grounds and structures of debris and hazardous conditions; maintain city facilities; prepare indoor and outdoor facilities and streets for special events.
  • Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and plants; clear sites of weeds.
  • Assist in the maintenance, construction, and repair of parks, and city facilities as necessary.
  • Operates trucks.
  • Cleans and performs minor repairs on assigned equipment.
  • Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
  • Perform general painting, plumbing, and carpentry work as needed.
  • Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
  • Perform duties related to pesticide control.
  • Lift and moves heavy objects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
