About The Position

Mesa Water District is now accepting applications for Facility Maintenance Worker I/II. This role involves performing a variety of general building and grounds maintenance and repair duties. The position also includes monitoring contract services for alarm, air conditioning, landscaping, and custodial services for the District’s main facility and off-site locations. The Facility Maintenance Worker I is an entry-level position performing grounds maintenance and general building repair duties, initially under close supervision. The Facility Maintenance Worker II is a journey-level classification performing the full range of duties independently. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed, with advancement from I to II dependent on performance and meeting qualifications.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, terminology, and tools used in building maintenance and repair (carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, painting).
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for maintaining and repairing hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local codes, laws, and regulations, including building codes.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of record keeping.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques.
  • Knowledge of the English language for effective communication.
  • Knowledge of modern equipment and communication tools.
  • Knowledge of computers and software programs (e.g., Microsoft software packages).
  • Ability to perform a full range of building maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ability to utilize advisory data and information including blueprints, equipment manuals, and work orders.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to safely drive and skillfully operate equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to maintain records, including time and material use.
  • Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, and sort information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.
  • Ability to effectively use computer systems and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade.
  • For Facility Maintenance Worker I: Vocational/technical training in general maintenance practices and repair is desirable; some general maintenance experience is desirable; skilled in using hand and power tools.
  • For Facility Maintenance Worker II: Vocational/technical training in general maintenance practices and repairs; one to two years of general building, mechanical, and/or electrical maintenance and repair experience comparable to a Facility Maintenance Worker I; skilled in HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, welding, minor roofing, window repair, painting and locks.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license.
  • For Facility Maintenance Worker I: Within one year following hire date, must obtain a Grade I Water Distribution (D1) Certificate.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational/technical training in general maintenance practices and repair is desirable for Facility Maintenance Worker I.
  • Some general maintenance experience is desirable for Facility Maintenance Worker I.
  • Skilled in HVAC, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, welding, minor roofing, window repair, painting and locks for Facility Maintenance Worker II.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of general building and grounds maintenance and repair duties.
  • Monitors contract services for alarm, air conditioning, landscaping, and custodial services.
  • Inspects building, grounds, and facilities to identify safety concerns and needed maintenance.
  • Performs building maintenance and minor repairs on building systems, including plumbing, mechanical, and lighting.
  • Sets up District contracted job quotes and job scopes, conducts job walks, and prepares job quote summaries.
  • Reviews the work of contract services and meets with contractors.
  • Performs emergency repairs and repairs office furniture.
  • Paints interior and exterior areas of facilities.
  • Sets up and cleans meeting rooms and prepares seating for events.
  • Cleans facilities, restrooms, and off-site facilities, including trash removal.
  • Maintains custodial supplies and stocks storerooms, prepares purchase orders, and orders/picks up supplies.
  • Monitors, inspects, and resupplies first-aid kits.
  • Performs ground maintenance, cleans service yards, and cleans storm drains and catch basins.
  • Operates and repairs irrigation systems and monitors for insects.
  • Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles, performing safety checks and cleaning.
  • Maintains work, time, and material records and writes repair tickets.
  • Performs other duties in support of department operations, such as repairing fences and gates, maintaining grounds, and assisting with minor repairs.
  • May participate in the construction, maintenance, operation, and repair of the District’s water distribution system, including main line repair, flushing, pipe cutting, water meter work, and valve turning.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and tools, including backhoes, forklifts, jack hammers, and hand and power tools.
  • Loads and unloads vehicles and equipment.
