About The Position

Delta Landing is a 172-room emergency shelter program and a public/private partnership between Contra Costa Health Services, Health, Housing and Homeless Services Division (H3), and Heluna Health. Our mission is to provide safe, low-barrier interim housing and comprehensive supportive services that assist individuals experiencing homelessness in securing permanent housing and ending their homelessness. We uphold the dignity of every individual and believe that housing is a fundamental human right supported through advocacy, collaboration, and client-centered care. The Maintenance Specialist is responsible for performing routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance and repair work at Delta Landing, a large-scale emergency shelter serving adults experiencing homelessness. This position ensures that all buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems are maintained in a clean, safe, functional, and code-compliant condition to support the health, safety, and well-being of shelter residents and staff. The Maintenance Specialist performs a wide range of duties, including plumbing, minor electrical work, carpentry, painting, appliance repair, and general facility upkeep. This position responds to work orders in a timely manner, conducts regular inspections, and assists with maintaining inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment. The Maintenance Specialist works under the direction of the Senior Maintenance and collaborates closely with the Senior Site Supervisor, Public Works, contractors, and external vendors to ensure high-quality facility operations and a safe, welcoming environment for all residents and staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three (3) years of building maintenance experience, preferably in a residential, shelter, hospital, or institutional setting.
  • Must possess and maintain a reliable vehicle and a basic set of tools necessary to perform job duties.
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general building maintenance.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work schedules.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use hands and arms to handle, install, position, and move materials.
  • Ability to assess facilities and equipment to detect maintenance and safety issues.
  • Dependable, flexible, and able to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Must successfully complete fingerprinting and pass a criminal background check.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Proof of current automobile insurance

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational training or certification in building maintenance, facilities management, or a related field preferred.
  • Trade certifications in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or related disciplines are highly desirable.
  • Bilingual and bicultural in Spanish.
  • Lived experience of homelessness and/or accessing behavioral health services.
  • Experience working in homeless services, shelters, healthcare, or social service environments.
  • Knowledge of Contra Costa County resources and service systems.
  • Familiarity with workplace safety standards and building code requirements.
  • Experience with computerized work order and inventory systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency repairs to maintain safe and efficient shelter operations, including but not limited to: Plumbing repairs, Minor electrical work, Appliance repair and replacement, Painting and drywall repair, Lock and door repair, Lighting fixture replacement.
  • Inspect, test, and troubleshoot building systems, equipment, and components.
  • Repair or replace broken or defective equipment using appropriate tools and materials.
  • Transport tools, parts, and equipment between work areas and program sites.
  • Conduct routine inspections of the facility, grounds, and equipment to identify and address maintenance issues proactively.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ensure fire safety systems, emergency lighting, and security systems are functioning properly.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and appearance of the property, including: Restrooms and showers, Kitchen and dining areas, Common areas and offices, Laundry facilities, Storage rooms, Parking areas and perimeter grounds.
  • Assist with custodial and janitorial activities as needed.
  • Respond to maintenance requests from residents and staff in a timely, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated costs.
  • Monitor inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Notify the Senior Maintenance when supplies or materials need to be reordered.
  • Assist in coordinating with outside contractors and service providers.
  • Support Public Works and other agencies in completing major repairs and capital improvements.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA regulations and agency safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with health, fire, environmental, and building codes.
  • Identify and report safety hazards immediately.
  • Participate in emergency response and on-call support as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with shelter staff to support smooth daily operations.
  • Assist with facility setup for program activities and special events.
  • Travel throughout Contra Costa County to support maintenance needs at additional program sites, as assigned.
