About The Position

This is semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of county buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment. An employee in this class performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair jobs on furniture, small machinery, doors and windows, other building grounds, and fixtures that do not require the attention of a journeyman tradesman. Proper PPE must be used as appropriate per the Luzerne County Safety Policy. Work is performed independently, in cooperation with other employees in the same class or as an assistant to a journeyman tradesman when so assigned. Work Assignments are provided daily by Building and Grounds Department Head, or by a delegate assigned by the same. Work schedule is typically dayshift with the need for unplanned and planned overtime. At times working on a different shift may be required when work required can negatively affect other dayshift employees.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the building, property maintenance, and mechanical trades.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in building maintenance work.
  • Ability to use and maintain common hand and power tools.
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring a mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Two years of experience in general maintenance work, which involved at least two years of building and mechanical trade.
  • Basic Computer literacy – Ability to use Microsoft Outlook.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn (within 6 months) the basics of CMMS software for work order processing.
  • Any equivalent experience and/or training which provided the required knowledge and abilities listed above.

  • Any form of formal maintenance training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Completes repairs to broken furniture.
  • Installs and adjusts doors, adjust repair/replace door operators.
  • Replaces broken window panes, installs door and window hardware, installs/repairs floor and wall tile and linoleum.
  • Builds forms for concrete work.
  • Replaces light bulbs and switches, opens clogged drains, adjusts and cleans appliances and machinery.
  • Drives truck to pick up and deliver equipment and materials.
  • Paints rooms, buildings, and equipment.
  • Mow grass, maintain landscaping, remove trash littered on Luzerne County property.
  • Responsible for clean up after self-performed tasks are completed.
  • Assists skilled tradesmen in major repair and installation work.
  • Performs necessary manual labor duties.
  • Performs snow removal activities that includes manually shoveling, use of powered snow removal equipment as well as plowing of parking lots with county equipment.
  • Applies snow and ice melt materials as necessary to keep county properties safe during and after storm events.
  • Performs any and all maintenance work related to buildings it’s components, facilities, and grounds management.
  • Remove, store and/or install office furniture as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
