About The Position

The State of Ohio is seeking a Maintenance Repair Worker 3 (MRW3) to provide skilled maintenance repair of the facility and act as a lead worker over youth workers in performance of semi-skilled & skilled maintenance repair. Performs semi-skilled & skilled labor including carpentry & masonry repairs, plumbing equipment maintenance, and operation of machine tools & welding equipment. The role involves continuous inspection of buildings & equipment for needed repairs or replacements and performing systematic & routine preventive maintenance. This position is part of the Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS), which aims to improve Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities. DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10-21, who have been adjudicated and committed by juvenile courts. Youth in DYS facilities engage in programming designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction.
  • Formal education in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • 12 months of training or 12 months of experience in maintenance repair (e.g., basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry & use of associated hand & power tools & equipment).
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by Sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.
  • In Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry only, applicants must have successfully completed the mandated basic firefighter/introduction to fire behavior course (S-130/S-190).
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must attend 3 weeks of mandatory, paid Pre-Service Training at the DYS Training Academy in Orient, Ohio (Monday - Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm).

  • Equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment may be substituted for the experience required, but not for the mandated licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Provide skilled maintenance repair of the facility.
  • Act as a lead worker, providing work direction and training to youth workers in semi-skilled & skilled maintenance repair.
  • Perform carpentry & masonry repairs (e.g., door, cabinet locks, cabinets, chairs, desks, floors, walls, windows, partitions, steps).
  • Maintain plumbing equipment (e.g., water & steam lines, sewer pipes, trap fittings, plumbing fixtures, pumps, regulators, valves, toilets, sinks, heating, air conditioning, boilers).
  • Operate machine tools & welding equipment in making repairs to metal parts & equipment.
  • On a continuous basis, inspect buildings & equipment for needed repairs or replacements.
  • Perform systematic & routine preventive maintenance of assigned area.
