About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a dedicated and safety-focused Highway Maintenance Worker 3 to join their Southwest Region maintenance team in Chehalis, WA. This role is crucial for ensuring Washington’s transportation system remains safe, reliable, and efficient for the public. Working under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent will operate heavy equipment, vehicles, and specialized tools to perform skilled highway maintenance and repair on state highways and infrastructure. As a senior member of the team, this position involves providing leadership and guidance to lower-level workers, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently. The role may also include crew lead duties or supervisory responsibilities in the supervisor's absence. This position contributes to WSDOT’s mission of connecting communities and keeping Washington moving by fostering teamwork, accountability, and a positive workplace culture.

Requirements

  • Applied knowledge of highway maintenance practices including pavement repair, snow and ice removal, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installations, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Possession of a Washington Class A CDL with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles in accordance with WSDOT standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong Understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
  • Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and use of cones/barrels.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience performing traffic control on high speed, multi lane highways.
  • Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS).
  • Proficient in standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Ability to lead and/or supervise crews, providing clear directions and making good decisions in stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize workload, with the ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.

  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.

Nice To Haves

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License (required within twelve months of hire).
  • Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of transportation maintenance equipment and the ability to safely operate, transport, inspect, and maintain a variety of vehicles, tools, and equipment used in highway maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply information from plans, diagrams, specifications, maps, and other technical documents to support maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
  • Knowledge of local road systems, highways, routes, landmarks, and surrounding service areas, with the ability to efficiently navigate and respond to maintenance, emergency, and operational needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply reading, writing, mathematical, and problem-solving skills necessary to understand work instructions, complete required documentation, follow safety procedures, and perform transportation maintenance activities effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Highway Maintenance Crews in the daily performance of all maintenance and operational tasks throughout the State Highways.
  • Prioritize, plan, schedule and budget maintenance activities.
  • Lead, schedule, and direct highway maintenance activities throughout State Highways.
  • Coordinate equipment and manpower with fellow Highway Maintenance Worker 3s.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities.
  • Enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems (i.e. Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work zone Database (WZDB); review computerized records to ensure accuracy.
  • Train personnel in equipment use, safety, highway maintenance and public relations.
  • Arrange for the purchase or repair of replacement parts; arrange rental or lease of privately owned equipment.
  • Conduct ICP inventory and accurate record keeping.
  • Prepare project estimates for all LEMO (Labor, Equipment, Material, Other) costs.
  • Investigate employee personal injury and equipment damage.
  • Assist in reporting accidents in computerized systems. (Safetrak)
  • Perform snow and ice control, to include application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment.
