About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Highway Operations Manager along with the Working Foreman, the operator performs the operation of motorized equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of County highways. This role involves safe and efficient operation of basic mechanical powered equipment and/or trucks, preparing and submitting reports, and performing service maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and/or signs. The position requires applying acceptable practices and techniques in road maintenance, repair, and construction, as well as performing manual labor associated with highway repair and maintenance functions. Backup support for other staff members during absences and peak workloads is also expected. Flexibility and availability are necessary due to uncontrollable weather conditions in both summer and winter to maintain safe and efficient roadways. Additionally, the role involves assisting the public in a professional manner, answering general questions, ascertaining the appropriate contact within the department or county, or referring to an outside source efficiently. Participation as a team member to improve efficiency and cooperatively solve problems, and adherence to the Department’s policy of confidentiality are also key aspects of this position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED), or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Ability, skills, and knowledge of the proper and safe operation of motorized equipment
  • Basic experience and knowledge in the use of personnel computers and associated software
  • Minimal knowledge of methods and materials used in the maintenance and construction of roads, drainage structures and safety devices.
  • Working knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Control Devices.
  • Must be able to successfully complete an equipment operator/driving test
  • Must receive a satisfactory score on standardized test(s) to measure the following skills: reasoning, mathematical calculations and reasoning, and following oral and written instructions
  • Requires a valid Wisconsin CDL license with appropriate class and endorsement, specifically Class B, with Air Brake endorsement (Minimum).
  • Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual labor associated with highway repair and maintenance functions, as well as provide backup to other staff members during periods of absence and during peak workloads as directed by the immediate supervisor
  • Flexibility/Availability due to uncontrollable weather conditions summer/winter to maintain safe and efficient roadways.
  • Assist the public in a professional manner, to answer general questions, ascertain the appropriate contact within the department or county, or refer to an outside source in an efficient manner.
