About The Position

This is semi-skilled and skilled work on City streets and expressways. An employee in this class works alone during evening or night-time hours and on weekends, primarily keeping City streets and expressways free of hazards to vehicular traffic. Works under general supervision on routine or repetitive assignments. Direct supervision is received on special or unusual assignments. Work, at times, may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of paid experience at the semi-skilled laborer level in highway maintenance operations.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class B commercial driver's license with no air brake restriction.
  • Knowledge of the uses and placement of lights and barricades on City streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of the various tools and equipment used for maintenance and emergency purposes on City streets and highways.
  • Ability to read and write and to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to utilize email to receive, respond to, and forward work orders and related correspondence.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of work activity.
  • Ability to function effectively under emergency or heavy traffic conditions.
  • Ability to make independent decisions about time, materials, and equipment usage.
  • Skill in the operation and use of motor vehicles and moderately complex highway maintenance automotive equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
  • A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
  • An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates pick-up truck loaded with various tools and equipment such as axe, spud bar, saws, wrenches, lights and barricades.
  • Drives on City streets and expressways taking steps to remove any hazards to vehicular traffic.
  • Maintains two-way radio contact with Sewer Maintenance dispatcher when traveling in vehicle.
  • Responds promptly when notified of traffic emergencies or hazards such as open construction sites, structural fires, neighborhood police activity, vehicular accidents, and slippery road conditions.
  • Sets up or adjusts barricades and flashing lights at scene of emergencies or hazardous conditions.
  • Secures open manholes or construction sites that have been vandalized.
  • Operates front-end loader to load materials into trucks.
  • Operates dump truck, hauling materials such as sand, salt, and cinders.
  • Spreads materials over ice, oil, or fuel hazards.
  • Operates heavy trucks with salt spreader and plow attachments for snow removal and ice control purposes.
  • Receives and responds to work orders and instructions via email.
  • Performs related work as required.
