About The Position

The Maintenance Officer is responsible for troubleshooting, inspecting, repairing, and replacing various building systems including security mechanisms, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. This role also involves overseeing contractors, supervising inmates on work details, maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies, and ensuring compliance with safety data sheets. The position requires responding to emergencies, maintaining positive relationships with various stakeholders, and staying current with maintenance practices. The starting salary is $23.94 per hour, with opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, and holiday pay.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must have three (3) years of related maintenance experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam; and psychological screening.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.
  • Working knowledge of building maintenance and general repair and installation procedures.
  • Working knowledge of security devices.
  • Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC operations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff; successfully communicate with other staff, contractors, vendors, inmates, and members of the public; and work as a team.
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.
  • Ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.
  • Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software (MS Word, Excel), and office machines.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete all MPCTC required entrance level training and annual in-service training.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace security mechanisms, including door locks, sliding gates, card readers, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace cameras, video recording system, intercom system, Door Access Control System, including card readers.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace plumbing devices like electronic flush valves, solenoids, showers, piping, drainage systems, toilets and sinks; unclog sanitation drains to remove obstructions.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, repair and replace or install electrical devices, to include wall receptacles and switches, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, etc.
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, and repair, if possible, the combination air conditioning/heating rooftop units, boilers, hot water heaters and all associated piping.
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors who come to perform requested service, repairs, or installations.
  • Supervise inmates during various details including landscaping, mowing, changing light bulbs, floor or ceiling tiles, snow removal, etc.
  • Maintain inventory and inspections of tools.
  • Maintain and update chemical material safety data sheets that pertains to the Maintenance Unit.
  • Purchase supplies and or services, maintain credit card billing, and reconciliation of paperwork monthly.
  • Subject to on call status, due to emergencies.
  • Keeps supervisor and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain positive relationships with detention center staff, vendors, contractors, and inmates.
  • Keep informed on current maintenance practices by attending workshops and educational programs or reading specialized literature.
  • Attend meetings and participates in various teams when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
