Maintenance Mechanic - Caswell Developmental Center
About The Position
The Maintenance Mechanic operates and performs rebuilds, preventive maintenance, emergency failure response, tear-downs, and inspections on three large centralized boilers, and works with other departments on 24 localized boilers. The steam plant operates 24 hours a day to provide steam for hot water, cooking, and heating for Caswell residents and staff. The position maintains and repairs this equipment to keep it operating safely, and also helps perform structural maintenance on approximately 100 buildings. This is an essential, mandatory position that must report to work or stay over during adverse weather events and may require working in adverse weather conditions.
Requirements
- One year of progressive experience performing tasks associated with mechanical maintenance or boiler operation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to walk, climb ladders up to 40 feet, and bend to check equipment in the work area.
- Ability to lift pumps, valves, and bags of salt weighing up to 90 pounds.
- Ability to turn and twist the body while opening and closing large steam valves.
- Ability to wear a negative-pressure respirator in boilers and tight confined spaces.
Nice To Haves
- Knowledge of safety precautions related to operating steam boilers.
- Ability to start up and shut down standby and online boilers and complete various blow-downs.
- Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, or replace boiler malfunctions and associated equipment needed to keep the steam plant operating until assistance arrives, if needed.
- Knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of steam plant systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, or replace equipment associated with steam plant operation.
