About The Position

Penn State is searching for a full time Maintenance Mechanic (Housing) - Grade 5 to join the team. This role involves performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks within university housing facilities.

Requirements

  • Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation.
  • Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training.
  • Over 1 year up to and including 3 years of effective experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of ordinary carpentry work on buildings to install, maintain, and/or repair such items as walls, partitions, drywall, paneling, woodwork, ceilings, doors, stair treads and risers, window glass, shelving, counters, drawers, bulletin boards, drape hardware, etc.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment and furnishings such as doors and door hardware, windows, and window equipment, screens, furniture, vacuum cleaners, and post office mail boxes, etc.; Lubricate, adjust and repair or replace parts as necessary
  • Perform plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, elbows, washers, valves, flanges, fixtures, etc.; Install plumbing fixtures, exposed water and drain lines, etc. Clear drain line obstructions, reseal bathtubs and sinks
  • Repair or replace water heaters to include replacing thermostats, upper or lower heating elements, pressure release valves, etc., including all wiring and plumbing necessary to perform complete replacement of unit
  • Perform mechanical repairs on ovens and refrigerators in individual apartments, such as cleaning, repairing or replacing burners; repairing doors and shelving on refrigerators, etc.
  • Perform routine repairs to electrical, and mechanical equipment such as replacing switches, receptacles and ballasts, motors, and lighting fixtures; relamp interior and exterior lighting
  • Perform routine inspections on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment; adjust, lubricate, clean, and replace equipment such as fans, motors, filters, air compressors, pumps, etc.; Report extensive repairs needed to supervisor
  • Prepare for painting by cleaning, scraping, sanding, taping joints, applying fillers, spackling wall surfaces, applying primer coats, etc.
  • Paint both interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers and spray painting equipment
  • Spot finish by applying stains and fillers; brush or spray paint, lacquer, enamel or other surface coatings on furniture or other pieces of equipment
  • Install, repair and replace floor coverings, such as tile, carpet, linoleum, etc
  • Move, assemble and relocate furniture; set-up furnished housing units, per established guidelines, when necessary
  • Operate power equipment such as drills, saws, sanders, welding equipment, grinding wheels, pressure washers, carpet cleaners, augers, various shop woodworking machinery, etc.; Use assorted hand and power tools
  • Operate university vehicles as required
  • Assist the food service maintenance mechanics, as required
