About The Position

Join our team as a Maintenance Mechanic 2 with the Maintenance and Operations Division (MOD) at Western State Hospital in Lakewood, Washington. In this important role, you will help ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of buildings, grounds, equipment, and facility systems that support critical services. Working independently and utilizing skills across multiple trades – including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, and mechanical repair – you will perform maintenance, repairs, remodeling, and construction projects that keep facilities functioning at their best. Your work directly contributes to a safe and well-maintained environment for staff, clients, and visitors.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED AND Four (4) years of experience in building maintenance, equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or a closely related skilled trade; OR Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program in a skilled mechanical trade.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with management, coworkers, customers, contractors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance principles and multiple skilled trades, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and construction work.
  • Ability to safely operate tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery while following established safety practices.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing for extended periods, bending, twisting, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to diagnose problems, prioritize workload, and work independently to complete maintenance and repair assignments.
  • A valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, laundry, kitchen, and facility equipment.
  • Maintain and repair building systems, structures, and utility distribution equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  • Complete carpentry, remodeling, and construction projects, including installing walls, cabinetry, fixtures, doors, flooring, and painted surfaces.
  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, electrical components, low-voltage equipment, and related building infrastructure.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and shop equipment; perform welding, metal fabrication, and equipment fabrication as needed.
  • Respond to service requests, monitor facility safety and environmental control systems, and take corrective action during equipment malfunctions or emergencies.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, maintain work records and documentation, and ensure compliance with safety standards and emergency response procedures.
