About The Position

The Infrastructure Maintenance Labourer plays a key role in supporting the maintenance and repair of municipal infrastructure, with a primary focus on water and sewer systems. This position involves physical work and requires agility to perform a variety of manual tasks in diverse weather conditions, as well as travel to multiple sites. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to safety, teamwork, and high-quality performance. Occasional emergency response outside of regular working hours, including evenings and weekends, is expected.

Requirements

  • Experience in municipal sewer and water system repair and installation.
  • Familiarity with road construction and utility work is an asset.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work cooperatively and safely as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe work culture, incorporating safe work practices in daily activities, and attending training as required.
  • Ability to demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, and initiative, while maintaining required records.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
  • Capable of using SiteDocs or other municipal software to record and document safety talks, toolbox talks, incident reports, hazard identification, and other related health and safety reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality regarding all matters pertaining to the municipality.
  • High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED); post-secondary training in a related trade is considered an asset.
  • Experience in a related field; municipal or public service experience considered an asset; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence with clean driver’s abstract.
  • Valid certification or willingness to obtain: Standard First Aid
  • Traffic Control Person (TCP) and Temporary Workplace Signer

  • Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) Awareness

  • Defensive/Winter Driving

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of municipal water and wastewater distribution systems, including manholes, valves, hydrants, and service connections.
  • Support sewer and water hook-ups, shutoff repairs, and valve maintenance.
  • Participate in daily pre-work job assessments and toolbox talks.
  • Assist with traffic control setup and safety reviews prior to maintenance or repair work.
  • Perform manual tasks such as shoveling, digging, and backfilling as required.
  • Perform asphalt cuts, sidewalk repairs, and restoration of work sites following infrastructure repairs.
  • Assist with sidewalk snow removal, including shoveling, plowing, and salting during winter months.
  • Support the Buildings and Grounds team on related tasks when required.
  • Assist with organizing the inventory of supplies, tools, and equipment, and maintain cleanliness and organization of the service bay and work areas.
  • Participate in daily pre-work job assessments and toolbox talks, ensuring that all job specific safety reviews, controls, and other requirements are in place prior to beginning work.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance, including reporting equipment deficiencies, repairs, or safety concerns.
  • Operate assigned municipal vehicles with GPS systems and regularly verify that the system is functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Perform duties in accordance with applicable federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and municipal policies.
  • Collaborate effectively with co-workers and management to promote a safe and positive workplace culture, while contributing to continuous improvement and service quality.
  • Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents of the community, representatives of organizations, and visitors.
  • Respond to after-hours or emergency infrastructure maintenance needs, including water main breaks and sewer backups, including evenings and weekends.
