As a Highway Technician with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), you will perform general maintenance on Indiana highways and interstates to keep roads clean and safe. Work includes removing trash and debris, filling potholes, maintaining drainage systems, plowing snow, and assisting with traffic control, particularly during emergency road closures. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for career advancement. Mandatory overtime is required for emergency operations, including winter operations. The position is with INDOT’s Brownstown Unit. The role requires operating basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment, moving and loading supplies, carrying out winter and emergency response duties, and conducting routine inspections and maintenance of equipment. Depending on assignment, duties may also include traffic inventory work, such as maintaining and installing signs and pavement markings, receiving and tracking supplies, and operating an inventory control system. Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function. Other duties may be assigned or changed. The position traditionally starts at $20.00 per hour, which may be adjusted based on education and work experience. Candidates with a current CDL and district-required endorsements earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL must obtain a CDL and required endorsements within 90 days of employment to earn the additional $1 per hour; onsite training is provided by certified INDOT staff. A degree is not required.
